Lost my Nokia N95 Mobile Phone at Hyderabad Airport

September 10, 2007 by Amit Bhawani 259 Comments

Yesterday while i was back from bangalore with my Apple macbook and ipod shuffle on the way to my home lost my Nokia N95 and all the beautiful memories stored inside it. I lost a lot of important calls, messages and information stored in my phone and today went to the police station and lodget a FIR so that i can recover my same cell phone number though i cannot get back the mobile handset.

Nokia N 95 AmitI was always told the new mobile phones can be tracked with mobile phone trackers even if the handset is lost using the EMIE Number and we can recover the phone back. If anyone of you know about this technology let me know so i can do something about my lost mobile phone Nokia N 95. I purchased that Nokia N95 mobile phone on june 20th 2007 which is not even 3 months i used that phone.

If you have lost your mobile phones too let me know because iam working with a deal with some telecom providers who said they can track your mobile phones when they are lost. I hope there are not many mobile phone losers out there.

What would your best suggestion be for buying a new Mobile phone?

That’s sad and I feel very bad to read that. A few months back, my mobile was snatched at gun point and I lost a lot of important data including business and personal data. After that, I don’t save much info on mobile and if there is, I back it up regularly.

You will need to contact the telecommunication company to get the same number rather than asking the police to do so.

Very sad to hear this 🙁 Please dont block ur SIM card…. if the theif uses ur sim card to his known persons then he is trapped… & lemme tell u one thing…. If the police wants… they can trace ur mobile phone & as this is not a cheap fone & this is a expensive affair so keep a track with police station & tell them u can give something for them also… & Hope u get back your cell fone 🙂

Once even I had lost my nokia 3230 I also went to my cell phone operator, police station but they said no EMI tracking will be and can be done! 🙁

India cell phone operators suck, they never help their users!

I also paid 100rs 😐 to the police fellow to make my asap FIR since I needed back my number asap!

I read through lots of articles i can be tracked through IMEI #, it is just that the serivice provider need to get the orders from senior officials of Police (DCP and above). I have taken a appointment with the Joint commissioner to seek help….lets hope for good i believe it should work….suggest if you have better suggestion

amith sorry to listen that, but i to lost my phone on yesterday. i dont know how to track that phone but i got some information regarding how to save our new phones

by using VITO Find me software from AT&T products. u can get all information on net.
International Mobile Equipment Identity (or IMEI) is a unique number associated with every GSM and UMTS mobile phone.

    What is your IMEI number?
You can find your mobile phones IMEI number it by dialling the sequence *#06# into the phone. Or check the compliance plate under the battery.

    Why is it useful?
If your mobile phone gets misplaced or lost, you can inform the the network provider who can then put the serial number (the IMEI number for the phone) on a shared database. This list stops this particular phone from registering on any network and will be useless for anyone even if the mobile phone’s SIM card is changed!

This IMEI number is also useful to unlock mobile phones and get them working once they are found. So find and write down your IMEI number right now, with growing incidence of stolen or lost mobile phones, you never know when it might be useful!

Hey Amit, what’s up man!! I lot my N95 too.! I browsed through the internet to find if anything would help me out regarding its tracing, and bumped at this site! Ya this is true, the service providers in India suck!! It was really a shock for me after I left the cellphone in my bag, for writing exams.. After returning, the phone vanished!! I have the IMEI number, but hell!! It is a total waste!! I hope my pride doesn’t get into wrong hands! I lost all my Contacts, Images, Videos and Important bank PIN numbers! God, hope they die while living! Any updates, I’ll always be here to read that!

i do agree there should be site made where people can log their imei numbers after the cell has got stolen…atleast somebody who buys used phones can check if the number exists in that list…will be a boon if even 10% of lost phones can be recovered…

Naina : Bills dont help especially in India where even if we have all the details the cellular operators dont help us in locating the phone with the current sim.

Amit : I agree and i will look into what i can make regarding a website on IMEI codes where everyone can searchout before buying a second hand mobile phone. Though other than that we cannot do anything for catching the theif 🙁

I can definitely think of contributing in an appropriate manner for the website….i just want to catch the bloody thief and hope that some beginning can be made….

btw – for people using BPL service, tracking phone is easier. They have an option for one time payment of 149 and they will load a software which will send sms to 2 numbers when a new sim gets loaded. wish i had known this before….the moment number portability is announced one thing is for sure i will move to bpl atleast gives me some hope incase the same thing happens to me….

Yash….knowing or not knowing imei is not going to help because the setup in india (as per nokia) is not available. They say that tracking using imei is network and gps dependant and no operator in india has the infrastructure….i have an email response from them on this :(( i doubt how true it is…probably they dont want to take that pain…wonder how vinod khanna was able to trace his lost mobile in one night….
One way though not sure of its effectiveness is using a mobile tracker software…refer bplmobile site for software detail….this software sends SMS to 2 stored number with customized message and the person would not know about it….i have for sure decided to shift to bpl if this software is dependant on network….vodafone and its customer service sucks big time…

Thanks Amit. 🙂 But will I be at least able to block the phone with the IMEI number??

Also, the BPL mobile software is available for all GSM phones. You just need to go to the store and get it installed at a small rate as long as you have GSM.

  51. Amit says

    December 3, 2007 at 4:41 am

sadly the answer would be no unless Nokia/Vodafone cooperates with us and police thats my understanding. if they start blocking the phones, these companieds would have no time for anything else to do because mobile theft has probably become one of the most common crime and no one in the companies care about it.

BPL software is available for GSM. CDMA would not need the software primarily because i think that there is nothing like a SIM card that one gets and puts in the phone. The CDMA phone should probably become useless if the thief tries to connect on another network. and in that case the thief is more likely to get caught….this is my understanding. not necessarily right…

Btw number portability will start soon (around 8th Dec acc to BPL person) so have decided to shift to bpl if vodafone does not offer me the mobile tracker facility….

Hi Amit sad to hear that you have lost your N95, it’s not a new thing in India.
You can’t find it b’coz there is no source of help provided in India by the telecomm. sector and neither by police. Since they are the ones, if they want they can recover it within one day.

I have also suffered with the same problem few days back when i lost my Nokia 3250 at Delhi it was also costly mobile. I purchase it for Rs.17,000/- but now its gone and i know it will never be recovered and so i have no hope for it.

But still it makes me very angry that i lost all my important data with it. There is not one issue i have taken the backup but now Nokia service Center is saying that you will be able to recover the data only when you purchase another Nokia 3250 this is really rediculous.

got my phone back today. Dont ask me how. Probably the police complain helped because the gym person took extra pain to find out who could have taken it and get it back and hand it over to me. Only thing was that the phone was formatted so lost all stuff like numbers, etc….infact chor ne cover, sim, screen par woh protective film rehti hain sab phek di….luckily he did not throw the memory card…

For those who want some kind of tracker visit this site –

they have some software….however this is valid for 1 year…so not sure how many would go for it. lekin surely people spending 25K cud spend 400 to safegaurd their phone…the site also lists down compatible handsets….these shud be compatible with BPL software as well….

Hi all! I am also a similar victim as my new NOKIA 6600 was stolen from my pouch at Chennai Railway station PF while boarding a train in Apr 2007. It had AIRTEL connection. It pinched me heavily by money and otherwise too. I lodged a complaint there and corresponded heavily with all the authorities responsible. I tried my best to recover it by all means but in vain. Iam sure that to recovering the stolen mobiles/thief by IMEI no by the Telecom Operators is the easiest and the only job next to impossible today. The pity is neither the operators nor the phone cos help their customers. They want to make money by increased sales out of this and issuing duplicate sims on extra payment If you have strong influence u can get it back withn hours and they will trace/help u. The Police have very good web sites displaying details of thousands of lost/stolen Cell phones and status showing as lost/missing. I have yet to come across any page displaying the recovery of stolen sets. The operators do not bother to even reply/entertain complaints to help their own cstomers on whom they are dependent even after making police complaints of the cell and the Cell Cos also work in unision and refuse to help saying they do not have system to block such illegal cells nor even take it as their moral responsibility not to service them if these sets come to any of their care centres and inform the owner/Police. They have however have excellent systems to check their service liabilities of warranty period by that same No. Both shrink their responsibilities. I think only solution can be a few people of same city to join together and file complaints in Distt Consumer Forums for deficiency of services and ask them their moral responsibilities. or legal communities to file PILs to stop this and set clean path for tomorrow for all of us for whicheverybody will be highly thankful.

    Good luck all the losers!

I feel sorry for all the guys who lost your mobiles. There are two mobile anti-theft software for Nokia Symbian OS Phones as well as Sony Ericsson Phones. For all Nokia N-Series mobiles which have Symbian OS you can install a application called “Guardian”.Likewise for Sony Ericsson Mobiles you can use “mGuard”. “mGuard” is absolutely free while you have to pay for “Guardian”.I came to know of the “Guardian” application through a newspaper article in which a “thief was nabbed for stealing the phone within a couple of hours using the information given by this software”. So folks, if you have a high end phone don’t carry it outside of your home without installing a mobile anti-theft software.

I too lost my new 6233 mobile yesterday after attending a meeting with the vendor and the consultants. All are very decent people and well educated . I infact identified almost 2 persons for the same and but no one has accepted the same. This is totally unexpected and leave it to the God who can punish them. I did not try police station at all.

Hi Guys, i too lost the mobile, but sure one thing if we all join hands we can trace our phones, because the phone contacts any telephone providers, so that it will register the deatils(this may be like wireless, if you contact wireless from ur computer then it will register ur MAC ID in wireless) like that it will too register any UNIQUE No. that unique no. may be our IMEI NO., if we fight with provider we can get the data, this cannot be done seperately, for that every one needs to join, come on friends we can fight for our rights, if you wish to share any opinions pl mail me to [email protected], and my contact no. is 9940033066.

Yesterday i was on the way to offices at Laxmi Industrial Estate, Andheri near Fun Republic I found my Nokia N73 I lost a lot of important calls, messages and information stored in my phone and today went to the police station and lodged a FIR
I was always told the new mobile phones can be tracked with mobile phone trackers even if the handset is lost using the EMIE Number and we can recover the phone back. If anyone of you know about this technology let me know so i can do something about my lost mobile phone Nokia N 73. I purchased that a month ago on March 16th 2008 which is not even 1 months i used that phone.

hey , this is avinash from mumbai.i had lost my N95 in december , filed an FIR , had my IMEI no.the NOKIA is wrong about the tracing system , its very well present in india.its just that those basta**ds [read police] use our IMEI to trace our cell and get some money out of the new user.i had been on trace of my N95 by being in touch with the police , they searched and searched , finally once they told me they traced it to a number.i said i will call back in 2 days for further updated.2 days later when i reached police stn , they conveniently told me that they traced the phone with some other IMEI number by mistake[joke , they expect me to believe this].since then , according to them they tried 3 times , but cell not traceble!!! and N95 ka IMEI cannot be changed…….THIS IS WHERE INDIA LAGS, NO TRANSPERANCY , i couldnt ask him to show me the report fearing if he was saying the truth i will never ever be able to get my cell back.
    anyone has similar experience ??

    Hey Guys!

I was just going through the blog and thought of adding some of my inputs…

I too lost my mobile this morning… It was a Nokia Communicator E90, hardly used for 3 months. It fell down from my office bag in the auto I caught to reach office today. (Damn… my car had to go for service yesterday!!!)

I filed a complaint at the nearest police station and blocked my SIM card.

Now let me tell you how a lost cell can be tracked if people… read police… puts proper efforts…

IMEI number, as you all know is a Unique Identity number for a mobile set. Whenever a handset is inserted a SIM and switched on, a communication with the network service is established and the IMEI number is transmitted to the service provider. Without this a connection cannot be established.

Once a complaint is registered with Police, they send the IMEI number to something called a CCS (a tracking system) used to detect cyber crime.

Now, if your mobile is lost and (of course) the SIM card is removed… the other guy (read as thief, robber, your rival as per situation) will insert some SIM card of his or close friends to check the set and use it. Once he does that and switches on the mobile the IMEI number is transmitted to the service provider which inturn is shown at the CCS.

Once you know the new number and the last few numbers dialled by him you can find the person who holds your mobile…

Only thing is that you need to put some pressure on the Police to work properly…

Hope this helps… and even my handset returns to me soon! 🙂

    Dear folks,
    don’t worry.No use in abusing police…?
Pl note ! the moment you lose the mobile, inform the local police immediately in Hyderabad city at least. Crime Branch has an arrangement with all service providers to provide details of the new user when he uses it again.Make sure you provide all the details to police.
We have recovered as many as 200 mobiles so far out of say 600 that were reported to us. Not bad..!

Oh! Lots of Losts! I am lucky enough to find back my N95 8GB, but with broken LCD……but its still a relief.

    May this help u…….
    1. Launch a FIR that ur mobile has been lost due to theft……..do not say it is dropped or missed.Write in FIR that u have very imp info in the cell and u want to trace threw IMEI.

    2. Go to SP office with a copy of FIR (computer dept.), approach a operator (ask for CHAI-PANI…..haha give him some money as advance and tell him that u will pay the rest after getting the mobile)

3.Trust me……..at SP office ..they r quite able to trace ur mobile if it is being used by any sim threw IMEI.

Just for ur help………I am not a member here.

@ Amit Surana : I did try out this thing but it didnt work our for me, you are lucky that you got your mobile phone back and it sometimes depends on your local police station too, i did try to even pay them some chai-pani which was around 5000Rs for N95 isnt that more than Chai-Pani right? Everyone is not that lucky to get back their lose properties.

I have lost my Nokia E62. I have also registered a FIR with Mumbai Police. I have read somewhere that you can send a copy of FIR to all the service provider and ask them to track your mobile phone based on IMEI number. If they do not take any action for the same then you can go the RTI and register a complain for the same.

    Hi Friends,

I am Firoz Khan, Somebody stole my mobile from my hostel room on 18/10/2008. Model number of the mobile is NOKIA N95 8GB Black Color.

I reported this matter to the Koperkhairene Police Station and filed a FIR on that matter on 18th Oct 4:40 pm and also blocked my simcard in Vodafone Gallery Vashi at 6:30 pm and got the same number.

One day I was going through a news paper named Mumbai Mirror and found that One Police Officer of Powai Police Station was successful in tracking the mobile which was stolen, so I consulted him regarding this matter. He suggested me to send an application to all the Service Provider’s and Nodal Officer’s with your circle Deputy Commissioner of Police attested signature. I wrote an application about this matter to both Powai and Vashi Zone-1, Deputy Commissioner of Police and I got a letter from Vashi Zone -1 on 29/12/2008 for tracing my mobile through IMEI No. I attached my Police FIR Xerox and Mobile Phone Receipt with DCP’s letter and posted that to all the Nodal Officer’s Address and also I communicated with them by mail. As all the Nodal Officer’s helped me out with the call detail and report regarding my IMEI No. One day Powai Police Officer’s traced my mobile and informed me on 31/12/2008 and after completion of all the investigation they managed to return my mobile in my hand on 07/01/2009 and finally I simply said thanks to all those who have helped me in bringing back my mobileJ

Note:- {I have found that as Mobile Phones has IMEI no; a simcard has IMSI no, So on the bases of that if anyone has inserted his simcard in the mobile which is stolen; the cell can be traced depending upon the IMEI and IMSI number.

A unique code encrypted in each mobile (Type in your mobile *#06# you will get 15 digit serial number of your mobile), known as the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) Number is now being used to trace a mobile anywhere in the country. Even if the SIM card (network) is changed, it can be traced.

    Whenever a phone logs onto a particular network to make or receive calls, its IMEI number is emitted and this gets registered. In case of stolen phones, the service provider can pass on the information to the police. And they can trace the user through the SIM card.}

So don’t go for buying second hand mobile or any other accessories because that might be stolen by someone and one day you will be in trouble.

Kindly go through the attachment for more information and let me know in case of any concerns. I’ll always help you out..!

this is the most informative post about recovering/tracking lost mobiles.please highlight this useful post from others which are just complaints about lost mobiles.
consumer rights associations should put pressure on TELECOM REGULATORY AUTHORITY OF INDIA and CELLULAR OPERATORS ASSOCIATION of INDIA to ease the procedure for tracking lost/stolen mobiles.

I was absolutly devastated, I could not afford to replace my phone and had lost all my contacts, pictures, and information stored within. Luckily it was returned back to me thanks to a lost and found recovery service. Trackitback called me to let me know that they had recovered my phone, and offered to have a courier deliver it to me for free within 3 hours.

My Fly mobile (dual sim model) was lost during my travel from Mumbai to Bangalore. The travel was undertaken by the train. My BPL sim number was 9870347965. I do not have a record of my IMEI number.

Herewith I would like to lodge a complaint with the BPL service providers for blocking the number and also it would be appreciated if misuse of the sim is prevented. I understand that tracing the lost mobile is beyond probablity. Would be happy if the same happens.
