After so many delays, it seems that it is now final that Mobile Number Portability which allows you to change operator of your choice without changing your number. Since the countdown has begun on the Mobile Number portability launch, we all would like to know that how we can change our operator by retaining the existing number and also things which are important for porting your number. If everything goes on track, Haryana will be the first state to taste the much awaited Mobile Number Portability from November 25 2010 and soon will this facility will be extended to other states too within an approximate of around next 2 months.
Under Mobile Number Portability, you can move to any Mobile Network Operator irrespective of CDMA or GSM like TATA DOCOMO, Videocon Mobile Services, airtel, Vodafone, Idea, BSNL, Cheers Mobile, MTNL etc. the only condition being that user needs to be at least 90 days old on that network and also if you are a postpaid customer then you need to clear all the outstanding dues.
Basic Rules:
First of all you should have completed two months with your current operator. If you satisfies this first and foremost rule then you can go ahead with the porting of your number. Be it a Prepaid or postpaid customer, you can very well move to a new operator but all the balance/schemes of the prepaid customer will not be carried forward to the new operator and likewise all the outstanding bills by the postpaid subscriber should pay all the outstanding bills / dues before porting his number to a new operator.
Procedure to Port your number:
1. You need to send sms as PORT <Your Mobile Number>, like PORT 9820098200 to a toll free number 1900.
2. As soon as you send this sms, you will receive a unique porting code as a reply from your existing service provider.
3. After receiving the code, you can go to the nearest gallery or to the official store of the recipient operator and can make an application in the prescribed form mentioning the unique code which you have received while registration via sms.
4. A maximum of 4 days has been prescribed for successful porting or transfer to execute this process and you will be shifted to a new operator.
FAQ’s
1. What is the cost of switching an operator through MNP?
The maximum charge which is prescribed by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) is Rs.19. This has to be paid to the new operator which will be your recipient operator. Though, the operator can choose to charge you lesser.
2. Can i change to a new operator multiple times using MNP?
Yes. Though there is no fixed limit on how frequently you can shift to the new operator, but once switched to a new operator you cannot shift again to the new operator for a period of 90 days.
3. Will my mobile number be disconnected during porting?
Yes, during the disconnection from your old operator and connecting to new operator your number will be dead for an approximate of 2 hours.
4. Can i carry forward my prepaid balance or schemes to the new operator after MNP?
No, all offers and balance stands canceled once you switch your operator from the present to the new one.
5. How do the two zones affect the consumers when they wish to port? What rules apply to them regarding switching their number from one carrier to another within the same zone or not inside the same zone?
DOT (Department of Telecommunications) has decided to implement Mobile Number Portability (MNP) within a circle. Thus a consumer can port their number to another service provider as long as it is done within their circle. Portability between other circles (called Inter circle portability) is not allowed as yet.
6. Can a postpaid user apply for MNP?
Yes, irrespective of the postpaid or prepaid subscriber you can use this facility but all postpaid customers should pay their all outstanding dues.
7. If am a customer of Andhra Pradesh and wish to port to a number to a new operator of Mumbai circle, can i do so?
No you cannot do so, you can only migrate to a new operator within a circle and not outside your current home circle.
Rafi says
whether MNP is possible between GSM and CDMA services?
Speedy Neal says
Yes Rafi, it is very well possible between CDMA and GSM!! The only condition is it should be of same telecom circle.
srinivas says
yes
ramesh says
Hi,
Have 2 questions.
1.Under MNP, can one shift from a Reliance CDMa to an Airtel GSM.
2. Can one use any CDMA phone across carriers such as Reliance/ Tata etc. For ex., if i buy a Verizon phone from US, can i use the instrument on an Indian CDMA service
Thanks,
Ramesh
Kenneth says
The answer to your first query is ‘Yes’ , and a ‘No’ won’t work for your second query.
Just my 2cents.
katari says
american cdma mobiles with sim can work when they are unlocked. but signals will be weak compared to ours.
ayush singh says
suppose i shift from relience CDMA to Docomo. then can i keep my old handset or will i have to change it With A Gsm mobile>.
Speedy Neal says
if you are shifting from your R CDMA number to a GSM Docomo number then you can very well retain old R CDMA handset but you will be needing a GSM handset in which you will have to enter a ported RCDMA to DOCOMO sim, the number will be same that is your R CDMA number.
MANU SINGHAL says
I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS.
I have a tata cdma connection can i change it with a tata docomo.
In this condition will i have to change my mobile also
Speedy Neal says
Hi Manu, yes you can change from TATA CDMA to TATA DOCOMO and also yes you need to change your handset too as TATA CDMA uses CDMA handset and TATA DOCOMO is a GSM Handset. Since both run on different technologies, there are different supported devices. You will eb requiring a GSM Handset to use TATA DOCOMO.
Dayaram says
When it (MNP) will launched i Rajasthan ?
Speedy Neal says
Hi, dayaram.. MNP will launch all over India by January 20 2011.
MANU SINGHAL says
THANK YOU
Prakash says
I have Airtel Number of Karnataka, can i make it for Gujarat without changing operator.
Speedy Neal says
Hi Prakash, you cannot change your airtel number to any of the operator of Gujarat as currently MNP will only be possible within the circle and not outside the circle. You can change your airtel Karnataka number to any operator in Karnataka itself.
Kannan says
Hi, I also had the same querry as prakash. Will this feature be available in the near future.
sajida satish says
salama lekum…
Hi, i have one doubt am using reliance gsm,i have the msg offer 500/day,50ps/min… if i change my network to anyother networks…like airtel, docomo… How does my schemes ,offers works…?? Plz answer me or mail me

sajida satish
NeaL Pradeep says
Hi satish, first of all thanks for your feedback but am very sorry to say that you will be just able to transfer your existing number and nothing else to a new operator. MNP allows you to just retain the number and offers of one operator can’t be transferred to the new operator. So you will have to choose from the new set of operators.
Manjusha says
sir,
I am having one cdma conconnection after the launching of MNP,shall i change the cdma conn to bsnl gsm 3g
rahul says
but ,once switched to a new operator you cannot shift again to the new operator for a period of 90 days. ok plz post an e- mail to my id
Speedy Neal says
@manjusha yes you can very well do that once MNP Launches on Jan.20 2011, but you will need to purchase a new 3G Enabled GSM mobile phone so that you can use the 3G Services.
SWATANTRA SINGH says
Hi, can i change reliance GSM to reliance CDMA in MNP ?
NeaL Pradeep says
hey @SWATANTRA SINGH, you can very well switch from GSM to CDMA too..
Jitendra says
Sure but if you are a Postpaid customer you need to clear all the pending dues
Jitendra says
Thanks for giving this much of information of regarding mobile portability but I have a doubt, i.e. If a customer calls to a another customer then the call getting connected through the starting numbers which is different for each telecom company and same for the customers of a same telecom company but if with the same number companies are giving facility to change then technically how it is possible
Pallav Desai says
When it (MNP) will launched Gujarat. Be’coz, i am change my airtel gsm service in Idea, can it possiable. Repaly me ….
JD says
Hi Pallav,
Number Portability is being started from today itself throughout India (20th Jan 2011). So, go for it.
Abhijeet Mathur says
MNP finally arrives in each and every state in India.
But I have a confusion that, is it possible to switch from Reliance CDMA to Aircel GSM?
Nitin Dhondiba Farkase says
Currently I am using MTNL postpaid (Billing) service. What will be the procedure to switched to new service provider for postpaid (Billing) irrespective of the tariff plans available with them. If possible, kindly suggest the tariff plans which costs not more than Rs. 230/- p.m. of IDEA, VODAFONE, RELIANCE, AIRTEL
NeaL Pradeep says
For idea MNP you can refer here,

sudarshan says
Hi,
Can you advice if I can switch from my current GSM connection to a CDMA service. If yes, do I need to purchase a new CDMA-compatible handset or can I use my existing GSM phone itself.
NeaL Pradeep says
hi sudarshan, if you ask me then better don’t switch to CDMA from GSM as you will be required to buy a good handset in CDMA which i think will be difficult as there are verly less handset options and also there is no flexibility in CDMA as number of operators in CDMA are very less.
Yes, if you are shifting from GSM to CDMA under MNP then you will be requiring to buy a CDMA handset. No, you cannot use your exisitng GSM phone to accommodate the CDMA UIM Card.
JD says
I thing MNP is a fantastic concept. Customers will surely get benefit from it. And yess…Its an alarm for the network operators. Give the best, or else loose the customer..!!!! So Cheerzzz to all.
Western countries are following it for a long. Now its time for us to take an advantage of it.
Jeetender singh says
Hi,
I have some question.
1. I have the reliance CDMA can I shift to another CDMA, with help of MNP.?
2. Can I change from post-paid to pre-paid with this option.
3. From when the services are starting at AP.
NeaL Pradeep says
hi Jeetender singh, from today the MNP has launched all across India, including in AP.
1.yes you can shift to any operator of your choice.
2. if you are having Reliance CDMA Prepaid and wish to move to Reliance CDMA Postpaid then MNP is not required, you can move directly with the same number but if you wish to move from Reliance CDMA to TATA Indicom Postpaid or Prepaid then only with the help of MNP you can move!
3. From today, that is January, 20, 2011.
Sunil Niphade says
1] while shifting from CDMA to GSM i need to change Sim ? i guess yes ! but my point is that when i port my number, my calls will be immediate diverted on GSM Sim or what will be the flow of process?
2] if from GSM i want shift to my original R-CDMA after 90 Days. in that case i can use y old sim or i have to buy new one
3]shifting from CDMA to GSM i have pay from new Sim ?
NeaL Pradeep says
hi @Sunil Niphade, yes for MNP you need to change the sim, as the operator which you wish to move will give you a sim.your number will remain the same but you will be given a new sim of the operator which you wish to migrate.
Ans.2 – you need to again go to Reliance gallery and again you need to apply for MNP to move back to Reliance or to any other operator after 90 days.
3. For every change, you will be getting a new sim which is included in the porting charge of Rs. 19.
Sunil Niphade says
as per ans3 :- for every change if i am getting new sim then what about old sim , shall i have to submit to old service provider,
NeaL Pradeep says
Old sim will remain with you, you need not return the old sim to any operator
ANKEET ANAND says
WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE TO CHANGE THE MY AIRTEL NUMBER NUMBER TO RELIANCE GSM CONNECTION KINDLY SUGGEST THE WELL AND EASY PROCESS TO CARRY THIS
Raushan kumar says
Is MNP available in Bihar ?
NeaL Pradeep says
Yes, from today it’s available
Raushan kumar says
but i have send a msg PORT to 1900 through Airtel service, but receiving msg was “MNP is not yet launched for your service area” .
NeaL Pradeep says
it might be that you have not completed 90 days with your operator that is airtel, you need to be with airtel for at least 90 days
Anilkumar says
I have a Virgin CDMA connection (now Tata Indicom)..If I change it to say TATA Docomo..will I have to change my phone too..??
NeaL Pradeep says
yes since ur current connection is CDMA and TATA DOCOMO is a GSM one, you need to first buy a GSM phone
Anilkumar says
@Pradeep : I have a Samsung Mobile tht has a logo of Virgin Mobile printed on it..How do I find out if my mobile is OMH or not ?
mukesh says
hello friends,
Q: Can a prepaid mobile user apply for MNP?
A:…………………………………………………………………………?
NeaL Pradeep says
yes Mukesh, both prepaid as well as postpaid customers can make use of MNP
mukesh says
thank you for reply….
Anilkumar says
And what if I change from TATA INDICOM CDMA to Reliance CDMA ? will then too I ll have to change my phone?
NeaL Pradeep says
hi anil, for this you either need to have a CDMA OMH (OPEN MARKET HANDSET) handset which will allow you to use any CDMA UIM card or you need to purchase a new phone, you cannot use a phone which has a company logo on it like Reliance or TATA as these handsets are locked handsets.
Dayaram says
At present i have TATA Indicom cdma connection and now i want to change this number to Airtel GSM but when i call to my tata indicom customer care they told me that new GSM Sim charge is 49 Rs.. So plz tell me what are charge for MNP to get Airtel GSM sim.
NeaL Pradeep says
hey Dayaram, all service providers have different start up packs which includes the porting fee of Rs. 19. It will be difficult to tell you the exact cost of airtel mnp pack as it varies from circle to circle. Kindly contact nearest airtel gallery for more or you can call to airtel customer care.
Arvind Joshi says
Hi,
One Question:
Does MNP also apply to Data Cards of all Service Providers.
Or is it only for Voice and not Data calls??
NeaL Pradeep says
hey arvind as of now mnp is only applicable for sim cards which are used in mobile phones, you can’t use mnp for data cards.
Faheem says
Dear Sir,
I convert Reliance GSM to Reliance CDMA then i have to change my mobile or not, i mean i purchase new CDMA handset.
Please reply soon
NeaL Pradeep says
yes faheem, you will have to get a new CDMA handset for accomodating the CDMA UIM card.
Arpit Sinha says
I have only One query….
How can I Convert my Reliance CDMA sim to Reliance GSM sim through MNP……
NeaL Pradeep says
just sms PORT (your mobile number) to 1900, you will get a porting code from 1901, now with this porting code go to Reliance World outlet, they will help you in further process
Aditya pratap Bindhani says
Which indian mobile operators provides the best gprs speed? Please reply as soon as possible.
NeaL Pradeep says
hi aditya, it will be difficult to pin point and say which operator delivers the max speeds as it all depends on the network strength in your area. if network strength is good then you will surely get good data speeds.
Aditya pratap Bindhani says
Which indian mobile operators has the best network coverage in orissa other than BSNL? Please reply as soon as possible.
Santosh says
Coverage wise, BSNL has the vast network and is on expanding to the remotest village. Other operators are in no match
Arvind Joshi says

Katari Ramnath says
Ya it is possible, just sms PORT (your mobile number) to 1900, you will get a porting code from Them, now with this porting code go to any Idea outlet, they will help you in further process and u have to buy a gsm mobile for idea sim card.it is not possible to use cdma handset ie reliance.

Neal says
the offers will not be same, you need to choose the offers from the recipient operator.
Anony says
I changed my network to aircel few weeks ago and i’m really pissed off with the network problems and the high amount services. As usual like other operators they activates things on their behalf and deductes the balance. Its a complete never buy option. You will regret it for sure. Its not worth paying 19rs. for such a low class network. If you are planning to swtich to AIRCEL then think twice because you will be bound for 3months, if you opted for it. Rest upto you! Best of luck! 🙂
vineet says

hi there, you need to ensure that your number is activated and is running, so if they are telling you to do a recharge of 102 then you need to do and then you can sms PORT to 1900 to get porting code
ARAVIND says

Under MNP,can i port from Vodafone GSM to Airtel 3G..??
Prasannajeet Pani says
Recently I decided to port from Vodafone to Airtel. I got my UPC and filled up Airtel form. I even got an sms from Airtel saying “your request has been recieved” and that’s where things became funny. Its been exactly 22 days since I filled up Airtel’s porting form, and yet I am awaiting for airtel to port my number. When I contacted their office, they said that my docs are ok and it should have been done easily. They asked me to wait for 2-3 more days (this is the 3rd time they said that to me). They are unable to figure out what has happened.
sanket parakh says
which networks are available for MNP in mumbai
Neal says
@Sanket you can migrate to any operator in Mumbai under MNP. Do let us know if we could be of any help.
navneet says
hi,
thanks a lot for this information.
i’ve got a question. i have submitted the form to change my reliance number to vodafone. but my reliance number is not in my name (coz i got it from sm1, so i dont know whose id proof was used). now i’ve given my id proof to vodafone while submitting the MNP form.
will this create any problem in my request for MNP?? can reliance reject the MNP request on this behalf??
Neal says
hey navneet, sorry to say that but yes there is a high probability that the documents will get rejected as under MNP the documents should match that of with Owner’s Sim card. So, you need to again give the port in form with correct proofs. If you ar elucky then you will get through 🙂
navneet says
yeah… but those fucking reliance guys will never let me feel lucky… i am totally fed up with reliance as they always keep on deducting my balance by activating any fucking service or caller tunes every week. also the signal quality is very poor and 80% of my calls are dropped.. m using it only bcoz i’ve to retain my number.. bloddy bastards….!!

narendra singh says
i think that the all of the companies had made internal commitment that not to,port any number to the other company. beacuse in the most of the cases customers receives the message that we have received ur application for porting and after that big silence had been made for the compnay side. so how can we come to know rha exact reason for delaying the porting of the numbers.
