Whenever you are searching for some useful information on some blog you would also search for the download link, source link or the recommended website url in the blog post and click on the same. Now as a blogger we have to regularly link to the source, software providers website or else refer to similar websites to keep the visitors happy because they dont have to search again for the same product. offcourse there are always problems and issues when you link to websites which were recently created or else small websites. The problem with linking to small websites is that they could be closed down any time soon and your blog visitors would be referred to a bad or broken dead link which is not a good job.
Also the search engines would index your blog post and then crawl down the links you are mentioned in the article following which they would be sent to bad links which are dead or else no longer valid, hence its better to find out all these kinds of dead links in a website and remove them. We had earlier written on a similar topic but which would find Broken Dead Bookmarks in Firefox because there are hundreds of links stored in the bookmarks and most of them would have gone dead or broken too.
In this article you are going to read about a very small portable software utility called as ‘SiteVerify‘ which is a very small application based on the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. Once you download and run it, you will be asked to enter the Domain URL to check out and verify all the links within. If you have a website with multiple sub folders and deep folders then you can increase the depth to say 5 or 8 but this could take a good amount of time for scanning down all the links. The maximum depth is upto 8 levels though its hardly found because most websites are in the range of 4-5 depth levels.
To test this application we didn’t proceed with this blog because it has more than 10000 URL’s and it would take a huge amount of time to scan and proceeded with Answers Next which has less than 1000 pages on the server. Next the software would instantly list down all the pages which were found on the website and then it would start scanning each of them. The links are displayed in different colors to give you a idea on the status.
Blue : Visited Link
Black : Non-Visited Link
Red : Broken Link
Once the report is generated after the links check you can even export the same in TXT or CSV format. For this click on the File > Export List and select the output format for the file to be downloaded onto your computer which you can later use to either remove or replace all the dead links from your website.
