What is SCSI (Small Computer System Interface)?

September 11, 2008 by Amit Bhawani Leave a Comment

The basic function of Small computer system interface more commonly referred to SCSI is to server as a standard cable system that is used to facilitate physical connections and transfer of data between a computer system and its peripherals.

The computer hardware is made up of a number of different components. Then you have other devices to which you connect your computer such as a printer, scanner, photocopier, fax machine and other such equipments. They serve to compliment the basic functions of a computer. There are many peripherals in the computer. The SCSI cable is what is used to connect the central processing unit to the screen along with the keyboard, mouse, webcam and earphones.

SCSI is basically a term used to identify a complete set of wires and terminators along with connecters that serve the purpose of facilitating the link between the computer’s peripherals and the machine it self.

Although the idea behind these cables is relatively simple but they do serve a very important technical function. These wires are constructed out of the finest building materials. Then they are surrounded by extremely reliable insulators in order to be protected against different things like electromagnetic influences, radio frequency noise etc. Such things may affect the function of the SCSI wires. This is the reason why the SCSI wires do not appear to be similar to ordinary wires.

There are two kinds of basic SCSI cables; the internal and external. The internal SCSI cables as the name suggests are those that are used inside of the system box. Since there is not a lot of disruptive interference inside the computer box these wires seemed to be a bit different from the external ones. They appear to be relatively simple and are void of any heavy insulator covering. The internal wires are never winding which is the reason they are also short.

On the other hand you have the external SCSI cables which are far more popular and commonly seen by people. As the name suggests these wires are those that are not confined to the inside of your computer’s system box. The devices that use SCSI cables in order to connect to a PC have their own power supply sources and enclosures as well. Since the external environment is bound to have a lot more disruptive influences the external SCSI cables are made much more reliable and meticulous.

You will find the external SCSI cables to be far more costly than those used on the inside. This is because of the difference in the way they are manufactured. The external SCSI cables are not only made out of more resilient materials rather their manufacturing involves certain intricate engineering techniques as well.

You can get a good look at an SCSI cable by checking out the wires that connect your printer to your PC. These cables are extremely important up until we enter the time where everything is wireless.
