RBI Guidelines for Online Credit Card payment processing
In order to make online transactions safe & secure , Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has recently passed a mandate, with effect from 1st August 2009 according to which all online payments are required to go through an extra level of authentication.
As per the mandate, while making payments online, you will need to enter a password as an extra level of authentication after entering your credit /debit card details. This all new technology for safe online transactions is called VBV – Verified by Visa or MSC -MasterCard SecureCode.
What is the process of getting this ‘Extra Password’?
To get an ‘extra’ password, you need to go through a simple process wherein you just need to log on to your bank’s website, register your card for Verified by Visa (or MasterCard SecureCode) and get your password. Different banks have different kinds of processes for registration. So we request you to contact your bank.
What has to be done after registering with VBV/MSC?
Now, whenever you will pay online, you will be directed to your bank’s website after you have mentioned your credit card details on the payment page. Here, you will be asked to enter your VBV/MSC password and after that you will be redirected to online store for completing the entire payment process.
What is the process for American Express Cards?
In case of American Express Cards, the process is different. For American Express Cards, you will be asked to enter your billing address on the payment page, which will be passed on to the bank. This technology is called AVS – Address Verification System. The bank will verify the billing address provided by you against the address that the bank has in its records. Be careful while mentioning your billing address as your payment will be rejected if the billing address doesn’t match.
How will we pay for internation transactions online, i do not know any merchant that i use which accepts these secure codes, like paypal, amazon, etc.
This technology is a failed technology and many international merchants refused to use these features, and as usual the indian system goes ahead and adopts it?
Man i wish fu)kin RBI goes bankrupt. Su)kers even dont know what is ecommerce. The power of security should be given to a customer like whether he wants it or not, it shouldnt be forced. I cant purchase anything online now. My bussiness is ruined by these guidelines.
This technology seems to have become obsolete 6 months after its RBI mandate. My credit card was fraudulently used for an online transaction two days back and I have a Verified by Visa (VBV)/ SecureCode password. I have complained to the the BANK – HDFC and blocked my card and registered a cyber police complaint also. I am waiting for the BANK to reply with their response. It was fraudulently used for an online transaction on Yatra online pvt.ltd. How do i get the general public informed about this misuse?
I feel, atleast you are lucky that the fraudster used your Card to purchase something on Yatra.com. Now this means that you can track him down more easily by finding the ticket details and passenger details on the transaction. Make sure you change the VBV Code regularly.
