The German tablet PC makers, Neofonie GmbH, have come up with their latest device known as WePad. The devise that sounds very similar to Apple’s iPad is an attempt by a relatively unknown company to get into the highly lucrative tablet PC market. It would be overstretch to call WePad a potential iPad killer but the company can at least give a decent competition to iPad in its home turf in Germany.
Neofonie, the company that makes WePad, boasts that they have given WePad distinct features and design that makes it a better and more appealing device than iPad in every sense. They believe that WePad is more powerful and efficient than Apple’s iPad.
A basic version of WePad boasts of 11.6” clear display, 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor and a 1.3 MP webcam (a feature that Apple iPad doesn’t have). The 11.6” screen is run by a powerful chip from Intel that banks on Linux software. The screen is compatible with all the flash based applications. Besides, WePad also features better and bigger display with ambient light and motion sensor. It also has an optional GPS and an internal micro fan to keep the device cool.
Like all other similar hand held devices, WePad also has Wi-Fi connectivity. A WePad with Wi-Fi connectivity and 16 GB storage capacity would cost you about $600. Whereas, a larger version of WePad with 32 GB storage capacity and a fast 3G modem would cost you about $766.
Some of the other features of WePad include:
- Fast Internet Connectivity
- A Plethora of ready-to-use applications
- We Magazine ePublishing Eco-system that allows uses to easily have access to magazines, newspapers, photos and books from different publishers.
Moreover, WePad has a decent battery life; it gives you 6 hours battery backup. It also has two USB ports so that you can attach additional devices. This feature of WePad gives it a clear advantage over iPad. With WePad, you can not just see photos, but also convert them into videos. You can get personalized information without having to remember the web address of all the websites; you also need not have to search for the headlines of the day, because WePad brings news to you automatically. It is like newspaper arriving on your doorstep every morning. It not only makes reading, hearing or viewing news interesting, but also helps you keep updated with the latest happenings around the world.
The WePad slated to hit the market sometime in July is sure to be a head turner. It would be interesting to see if this German made touch screen device appeals to not just tech savvy people, but also other users, when we already have other Internet connected devices like smart phones and laptops.
