Even the fastest processors and memory chips are slowed down by the lagging data of the mechanical drive. This leads to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>slow copying and moving of files<\/li>\n<li>delayed program start<\/li>\n<li>irritating pauses when working<\/li>\n<li>jolting and interruptions when playing games and videos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Use the cache :<\/strong><br \/>\nNormally, Windows and applications write directly to the hard drive, which can quickly lead to a bottleneck. Because whenever a lot of data is written simultaneously, the hard drive quickly reaches its limits, which slows down your PCs performance. However in Windows Vista\u2122 and XP\u2122 it is possible to switch on the cache. The data to be written is first saved \u201cvirtually,\u201d which considerably accelerates the write access. Later, when the computer is no longer working at capacity, the data is written from the cache to the hard drive. In this way you work significantly more efficiently and quickly!<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to activate the cache:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Search for the \u201cDevice Manager.\u201d To do this press the \u201cR\u201d key while holding down the \u201cWINDOWS\u201d key. Enter the command \u201cdevmgmt.msc\u201d in the \u201cRun\u201d dialog box that appears and confirm with \u201cOK.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Now double click on \u201cDisk drives\u201d and then on the hard drive of your computer. (Note: USB drives, card readers, etc. are also shown under \u201cDisk drives\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.amitbhawani.com\/blog\/Images\/W\/Window-Device-Manager.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Windows Device Manager\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.amitbhawani.com\/blog\/Images\/W\/Window-Device-Manager.jpg?resize=500%2C365\" alt=\"Windows Device Manager\" width=\"500\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>In the next window click on \u201cPolicies\u201d and on \u201cOptimize for performance.\u201d Then select \u201cEnable write caching on the disk\u201d and, if available, also \u201cEnable advanced performance\u201d (only Windows Vista\u2122). Finish by clicking on \u201cOK\u201d and then restart the system.<\/li>\n<li><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Device Properties Windows\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.amitbhawani.com\/blog\/Images\/D\/Device-Properties.jpg\" alt=\"Device Properties Windows\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now your computer&#8217;s hard drive access will speed up noticeably. In our tests, for example, copying a 2GB file was accelerated by 25% by using this tip.<\/p>\n<p>There is, however, a small residual risk: Since the cache is a virtual memory, in the rare case of a power failure your data is not saved. With laptops this is not a problem since the battery prevents a sudden loss of power. This is why <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amitbp.com\/TuneUp-Utilities\">TuneUp<\/a> recommends: switch the cache on! There is a slight risk for desktop PCs. However a loss of data would occur only if a power failure coincided with a cache that has not yet been written to the hard drive. In this case decide for yourself whether increased security upon power failure or long-term improvement of your PC&#8217;s performance is more important.<\/p>\n<p>With the cache switched on the hard drive works more efficiently than ever \u2013 and the speed of your data increases considerably.
