I have a wifi setup at my Home and Office both and whenever i try to access my Internet at Home and check internet speed i find that its relatively lower than what i should be getting and i was always compromised with a fact that the ISP may be offering me less speed than promised but the answer was something else.

Anyway getting back to the point of securing your Wireless Internet Router or your Wired Router which by default is open for access to anyone and most of the times you store your Internet ISP logins on your routers configuration in order to get instant without logins asked Internet access.

First of all you need to access http://192.168.0.1/ URL through your web browser. This is the link where you will be finding the Router Web Configuration through which you can set up logins to your routers configurations page, the ISP logins, the wireless router setup, DNS settings and status of your router.

Next Click on the Wireless option on the left panel and you will be shown with Wireless Settings which you can edit and this is the place where you need to enter the Network ID(SSID) where you can assign a name for the network, which means that whenever someone checks their wireless networks the name which you had assigned in this option would appear to them.

Next under the Security Drop Down option you need to click on WEP, which is a type of security you can assign to the router. You need to select WEP, followed by Key Mode – HEX and then assign different 4 keys if you are using this connection at your office or a place where multiple people work. Like having a key for your guests, a key for your friends and a key for your family. Once you assign the Hex WEP Key which can consist of alphabets & numbers you need to apply on the settings, which will make your Wireless Router to restart since new settings were applied. This can take upto 2 minutes of your time.

Once the Router is restarted on the ‘Wireless Network Connection’ page you will find your connection with a security button and when you click on ‘Connect’ you will find that a dialog box would be shown as below.

This box will be asking you to post the WEP Key or WPA Key which you had assigned earlier in the settings and this is asked to everyone who tried to connect to this Wireless Network.

whenever you visit the Wireless Network Connection you will find a new connection created on the name you had assigned with a security status. You need to click on Connect to get started with this connection which is a Security-Enabled Wireless Network. Following this you will be asked to enter the Network Key which you had assigned earlier after which a connected is requested to your router with the network key you enter in. Thats it you have now secured your Wireless Internet connection and can now save up your bandwidth because others cannot use it.

Securing your Home Internet Connection is a really important task because who knows someone else is using your Internet Broadband and you are getting charged for the same.
