Writing Pillar Articles for a Better Blog Brand

July 12, 2008 by Amit Bhawani 11 Comments

Generally most bloggers write articles which are around 300-500 words in size and if you check out any blogs they are updated atleast once every day and what the heck it does not really take a whole day to write a small 400 words article. It can take a matter of couple minutes if you are writing about a topic which is one of your favourite and can take upto 2-3 hours if the topic/niche is new and in this case you need to research on the same by reading about the same topic on Wikipedia, About.com, other web blogs using blog search, google search results etc.

What is a Pillar Article?
A pillar article is real good article with indepth information posted on a certain topic and the article would range in 800+ words with original content and expert knowledge of the same. A general/regular article would take around a hour maximum but a pillar article can take around a day’s time to a week’s time because you would need to research heavily on the topic and write down a complete list of information in para wise, bulleted points etc.

Advantages of Pillar Articles?
There is no real word count limits for a pillar article, but what really matters is the information provided in it. My first Pillar article on this blog according to me is the best laptops article which had helped me gain huge amount of visitors because it had a small comparision of different laptop providers, since this article started getting huge amount of visitors from the day it was posted i made a target of writing 1 pillar article every week and this can help you in getting subscribers, traffic, rankings and blog brand.

How to/ Sample Pillar Articles?
The first thing is that you can get confused on how to write a pillar article or where can i find some sample pillar articles. As i mentioned above the words count just dont matter really when writing a pillar article, what matters is the amount of research and information provided in these articles. Here are some articles which were written with complete information on those respective topics.
Laptops Security Guide 1250 Words
Writing a Book 770 Words
Starting a Shopping Portal 1060 Words
Make Real Money Online 800 Words
No One Helps you to Make Money Online 700 Words
Uses of Cell Phones 1550 Words

Pillar Articles Writing Blogging Idea

You just need to select any topic in which you personally feel you are a expert in and can discuss about it with anyone. Generally writing lists is one of the best idea in pillar articles writing. Start writing about the same and make a list of all the important points you feel about the topic. Then start writing in detail about each individual topic and offer links to resources within the article. This way you can get traffic from the trackbacks and also offer your visitors with a excellent resource while reading your article.

Promoting a Pillar Article :
You can promote these articles using social bookmarking websites and also within your network and get genuine comments. Here is a small list of channels you can select to promote your Pillar Articles :

  • Web Blogs – Commenting on Relevant Blogs
  • Online Discussion Forums
  • Social Networking Websites – FaceBook, MyBloglog, BlogCatalog, Linkedin, MySpace
  • Social Bookmarking Websites – Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Digg, Reditt
  • Search Engines – Google, Yahoo, Live.com
  • Offline Advertising – Newspapers, Classifieds, Word of Mouth, Magazines, Radio
  • Hope the above article would help you in understand pillar articles writing in a better way.

Is it true for pillar comments also ? Do pillar comments help us in getting better follows or the short and useful ones ?

Also should the pillar posts contain the original matter or can it be quoted from the sites (like in case of a startup review, should we quote about the features from the About page of that site itself to make the post longer) ?

Anything helps either the posts / comment, but quoted duplicate content does not really help you in any case. Try to write the features in your own language with your views then it would work out well.

Amit the information about pillar posts would be really useful. It would be nice if you can expand a bit more on how to promote pillar posts on social networking and which social network should a new blogger start with to promote his blog/post and get visitors.

Do you think writing a technical article would help me to drive a traffic to my website. Also can you list good article posting websites.

Pillar article writing, although takes time to be written, it pays back well and you get the benefit back from it if it’s promoted well and noticed well enough by search engines rather than the direct referral traffic. It’s an observation that the pillar articles are always better noticed, rated by the search engines too.
