How to Disable Location Services in Safari

June 11, 2010 by Amit Bhawani

Privacy seems to be the biggest issue these days and with the number of Internet users increasing, the social networking websites are also increasing and many of these are asking the users to Enable Location services so that their location can be easily found and shared within the users network. To give you a example you can check out Twitter, Google Latitude, Google Maps, Safari Browser itself all of which normally find your location through the Internet Connections ISP details and then these are used to show you related information, location based local searches and advertisements.

Sharing can be a good idea but this is not always a good idea for personal safety too because if someone can know that you are out of your home, then there are chances that your home is not secure because the information is already in public. This is the reason in this article we are going to show you how to prevent and stop the Safari Browser from allowing different location based websites and keep your location private.

Open the Safari Browser and Click on Preferences Option, next select the Security Tab.

Next Uncheck on the option which says ‘Allow websites to ask for location information‘ which will disable this service instantly.

Your article is misleading. Safari doesn’t share your location with a website unless you specifically allow it to, and it asks you for every single website, every time that website wants your location.

Safari maintains your privacy whether you have this checkbox checked or not.

Contrary to the above poster’s comments, I find that websites are able to find my location, even if I turn off the Safari preference as above, AND check “disable location services” in system preferences -> security, AND after clearing Safari’s cookies and cache. Some mixture of WiFi, IP and God knows what still gets through and clearly identifies my location to the weather website. So safari does NOT maintain your privacy.
