August 7, 2010 by Amit Bhawani

In order to upgrade the Firmware of your Samsung i9000 Galaxy S Android powered mobile phone you will have to make use of the Samsung Kies application which is going to automatically detect the current firmware and check with the Samsung server if there is any new version available. First connect the device to the computer using the USB Cable and then run the Kies software on your computer to make sure that the device is detected. Click on the Upgrade Icon available on the bottom right section and then proceed with the options displayed on the screen.

Samsung Kies Firmware Upgrade

Once you click on this Icon you will be displayed with a quick message on the current firmware updates available as shown below.

Next the first step would be reading the Caution Message which gives you the following information.

Make sure that only the device you are upgrading is connected. Disconnect all other devices :

  1. Removing the cable from the mobile phone while upgrading may cause an error. Please make sure the connection is maintained until the upgrade is complete.
  2. Executing PC software while upgrading can overload the computer.
  3. Do no run the menu by pressing any buttons while upgrading.
  4. Do no connect other mobile devices (MP3 players, cameras, external hard drives) to the PC while upgrading.

The device information is shown as shown below :
Service Name : GT-i9000 Firmware Upgrade
Service Version : (PDA:JG4 / Phone:JG4)

Click on the Next button to continue, The Kies Software would start downloading binary files from the server, and at this moment you should not remove the mobile device from your Computer.

Once the files are downloaded to your computer from the Online server the software will start upgrading your device. The Update is around ~600Mb+ in size which is quite large, hence you need to take patience while updating your Galaxy S device. Once this is done there would be the update process started on the device screen displayed.

The following screenshot would show you how the update would be displayed on the screen.

I performed the update exactly as described above and it deleted all my SMS msgs, and all of the installed apps I had purchased. Anyone else have this issue? How can I prevent this from occurring again?

    Thanks

No luck with a solution as yet. Great forum where people can have the usual bitch fest. After that it’s just deadening silence apart from the croaking fogs, a ghostly wind and rustle of the tumbleweed rolling past…..No tech assistance or Samsung life preserver…..

yup, my phone(which I’ve only had for a week luckily) was competely set back to factory as well.
Hey guess what Samsung? When I had an iPhone, it would back the phone up before doing the upgrade and then put the info back on the stinkin’ phone.
    FAIL!

I highly recommend MyBackup Pro. It allows you to backup your apps and data on SD or online.

So, for anyone who hasn’t done this yet, please get this app or some similar program before you do any updates. Learn from our mistakes.

Same thing happened to me. So much for all those cool pictures I was going to transfer onto my computer. Thanks a lot, Samsung, for making me lose a month’s worth of data and two years’ worth of contacts. I knew I should have bought an HTC.

  12. Smacknuts says

    September 16, 2010 at 12:27 am

I lost everything. Every contact, song, picture and message. When I called their tech support, the lady said “Didn’t ya know that happens?” Well I do firmware upgrades on stuff all the time and never once has it wiped everything clean. I hope someone gets fired over this. What a pain in the ass. I wish I had stayed with my BlackBerry. This will be the last Samsung product I ever purchase. And I have already told all my friends to get a different phone. One that wasn’t designed by half wits.

OMGOMGOMG Freakkkiiiinnnng out because I’ve just lost EVERYTHING. And I needed some of that stuff. Pretty sure my contacts are gone too. And not everything’s on my old phone. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Complaining to Samsung right now.

Love the way everyone’s slaggin samsung off when they actually tell people to back up b4 upgrading incase of any loss….

    your own faults… not samsungs.

    • Eric says

      October 15, 2010 at 4:41 am

Really can you tell me where the hell it says to back it up?? lol I called samsung and they admitted that they don’t tell you to back it up.

    • JagedNS says

      October 16, 2010 at 4:59 pm

Sure it says to back up bedfore doing the upgrade, & Kies offers some options for backing up your contacts BUT it does not backup any of your downloaded Apps.

On my old iPhone 3G when I hooked it up to iTunes the phone was Completely backed up and then restored back to how I had it once the firmware upgrade is done.

Samsung has a few lessons to learn in this regard.

Ajith, not sure where you are but I know they pulled the update in Canada because it was soft bricking the phones.
This happened to mine & when I brought it in for service, the tech said mine was the 3rd one he had seem that morning 🙁

I’m not sure whether Samsung heard all of this or I was lucky with my phone settings, I just completed my upgrade without any problems!! All contacts, messages, paid & free applications.. all intact! And a visibly better operating system!
Maybe people should keep the “backup data” option ticked in the security settings. I had.

    Thanks People

I just upgraded my Galaxy S through Kies and lost my Contacts. I can’t even add new ones because when I click on Contacts it all goes blank and needs to get restarted. My e-mail no longer functions. All the parameters were accepted for the account, but it will not download messages. Gmail works fine.

    Dear Experts,

I m new to Galaxy S GT-i9000. I’m working india, but as of my project i came to Saudi Arabia and i bought a Samsung GT-i9000 from here. So when i started with the kies_1.5.3.10093_80 it is recommended to Update into new version. So that i downloaded Kies_2.0.0.11014_49_2. In settings i checked about my phone information.
    It is showing that the
    Firmware version is 2.2.
    Base band Version is i9000JXJPD.
    Kernel Version is 2.6.32.9 and root@SE-S606 #89
    Build Number is FROYO.JPJPF

I hope my android is updated to 2.2 Version. Even though i cannot access to Androd Market with my gmail account. I tried downloads from Android not in one bit, i tried many times. But still it is showing i need sign in another account. Also the phone is not showing any android market Icon to download softwares.

I want to know how i can access android market from my phone or PC…!…?
And my phone is it updated to Froyo or not…!..?

    Hi Amit,
i have GS2 . I have donwloaded 6.3 HD GB games (with apk and data files for each game) from torrent.
The torrent uploadeder has sent the below steps to copy the games which i did but its not working. can u pls guide. I am in mumbai…if u share your nos i can call u 🙂

    steps:
Tool for unpack all gameloft server packs (jar and zip) : require .net 3.0

open apk with winrar, 7zip, … get links in file /raw/data.txt, download and unpack with this tool

when it’s unpacked, put sdfiles in good place on sdcard (/sdcard/gameloft/…)
and if you put folder files in package folder /data/data/com.gameloft.android… you don’t need internet for launch the game 🙂
