VaultPress – WordPress Blogs Backup Service Review

August 2, 2010 by Amit Bhawani

There are many different WordPress sites backup service which are going to help you in backing up your complete blogs and these can be useful when you are in a problem and would like to restore your blogs. You will have to either schedule download the data to your computer and then restore if you are willing to stay cost free and then make sure that your local backup is not deleted and is also updated every single day. Another option is setting up a backup at Amazon S3 or any other online server like Mozy which is also easy in initial setup but also would cost you a monthly fees and is bit hard in restoring.

To overcome all these huge problems which bloggers come through, Automattic team which offers the WordPress script and online blogging service at wordpress.com has launched VaultPress.com which is a Online Blog Backup service for bloggers to small business with packages ranging from 15$ to 40$ per month.

Once you signup for a account the service would offer you with a direct download of a plugin which you will have to download and upload to your blogs plugin folder and activate it.

VaultPress WordPress Backup Service

The copy of the plugin is unique, and just for one blog. It contains a special set of codes which will be used to identify one and only one blog to VaultPress. It’s also used to secure the lines of communication between your blog and the VaultPress servers making sure that the aliens can’t take control. Once you upload this plugin to your blog and activate it VaultPress will automatically begin making a full backup of your blog. You’ll be able to view its progress, and see when it’s gotten everything synchronized. Once synchronized you can visit the VaultPress.com dashboard and start exploring some of the cool features that will now be available to you.

Once the WordPress Plugin is activated you will get a new option under the WordPress Dashboard. Click on this and you will get access to the plugin status. The WordPress Plugin will automatically start backing up all your Uploads, Plugins, Themes & Database folder which dont require you to do anything and just wait and watch.

VaultPress Dashboard : The VaultPress dashboard located at dashboard.vaultpress.com is the location where you can get the current transfer status along with the Full Backups details – up to the minute snapshots of your entire blog. Along with this under the Activity Log you can get the details on all the previous transfers and all the activity performed. In case you get any errors which is rare you can contact the Support Team through the dashboard and the team would be happy to get in touch with you in fixing the problem.

Currently the service limits to one single blog for each account and price package levels depends on the features they offer. If you signup currently under the Beta you would get a entry at a lower price and the price includes unlimited blog data backup. The initial backup can take a decent amount of time because all the data is copied to the WordPress servers following which the data synchronization wont take much time, though you need to make sure that you perform this task when the CPU load on your server is load to make sure that you don’t enable much stress on the server.

Overall we would rate the service 4.5/5 for the simplicity in backing up our blog and the feature of having backups of the files located at three different locations which is in the cloud. We could have given it a 5/5 only if it would have offered us to backup all the different WordPress blogs hosted on the same domain. Hope this option is added in the future versions because there is no point we would go for buying the service for all the 10 mini blogs which are hosted on this domain since that would cost a lot more than the hosting cost every month. If you are a blogger who is reading this article, then just go ahead and apply for a account and enjoy a tension free blogging life because you don’t have to worry about the backups from now on. VaultPress takes care of your WordPress based Blogs!

$15 per month? Isn’t it too much for a backup solution?

Yes its costly for small or upcoming bloggers but for bloggers who make 500$/month, 15$ would be a huge cost and it can be considered as a investment when compared to the tension free life after setting this up. Now i can focus more on the blog rather than worrying about the problems and issues which can be raises with dead hdd at the hosting company.

Did you try out the setup of Amazon S3? Its quite confusing for most bloggers and VaultPress is the most easiest in setup and usability. I will make another post soon on the advantages and comparisons.
