How to Schedule Backup Blogs to Email/Computer

September 25, 2008 by Amit Bhawani

Backup WizardIts very good that you have started blogging and have started making money online but taking a backup of all your data is very important as much as is the promotion of your blog. Generally most people neglect this part when they are into serious blogging and when problems like these occur they are left out with no other option than starting up the blogging venture from Level 0 and getting started overall again losing up the useful content, visitor comments and the rankings.

The first and most important point would be the selection of a web hosting company which can help you out in scheduled backups like we offer at hostbrains.com where in everyday a backup of all your data is taken and we can restore part/complete data in case of any problems. You may need a data restore in case you have upgraded the scripts on your website and have ended up with a problem or else when your website is hacked. In case of a hack attack you end with all files being edited and stuffed with useless code or else some important files deleted and you only have the option to restore the last backup file. Do read this wordpress security guide

If you are running a wordpress based blog its very important to take regular backup of all your posts and comments because these are the most important data tables in your wordpress database. You can always restore all your blog’s plugins, theme files and images but recovering all the posts and comments would be a very job if you try to do it manually. Here is a plugin called as WordPress Database Backup

Blog Backup Tables

This wordpress plugin allows you to take a scheduled backup of all the important database tables and also the backup of all the tables of different plugins you use on your blog.

Installation of this Plugin :
1. Copy the wp-db-backup.php file to /wp-content/plugins/
2. Activate the plugin at your blog’s Admin -> Plugins screen
3. The plugin will attempt to create a directory /wp-content/backup-*/ inside your WordPress directory.
4. You may need to make /wp-content writable (at least temporarily) for it to create this directory. For example: $ cd /wordpress/ $ chgrp www-data wp-content (where “www-data” is the group your FTP client uses) $ chmod g+w wp-content

Backup Options :
After you select the tables you want to take a backup you will be asked with the following options for the backup file.

What to do with the backup file:
* Save to server (/home/public_html/wp-content/backup-b23c8/)
* Download to your computer
* Email backup to: Your Desired Email

Scheduled Backup Option :
Scheduled Blog backup
You have the option to take a scheduled backup of your database in scheduled intervals and send the backup file to your specified email address which is helpful in case your server’s hard disk is failed and you end up without any backup’s.
* Never
* Once Hourly
* Twice Daily
* Once Daily
* Once Weekly

Note : There are many backup options and one of them can be found under your hosting account’s cpanel section which you can use and take a regular backup of your website which is not a blog and make sure you have all your data safe.

    @ Pavan – I made this post when i found a blog with quite good number of posts lost its total database and they had to recover everything manually which sucks especially losing the comments sucks in my view – check this out http://www.technospot.net/blogs/what-happened-to-technospotnet/

    @ Amit

    I know that, they lost everything. Even the theme and ran with wordpress default theme for some time.

    What could be a probable way to recover in such crisis time? Thank god, they delivered full feed which would serve them now to recover everything back.

    @ Kavitha

    You already have a domain with you, you install wordpress in other directory like http://www.indian-share-tips.com/backup and install wordpress there. You can give your blogger login credentials to wordpress software and import all blogger posts into wordpress which you can back up using the above discussed plugin.

    My suggestion is that you move yourself to wordpress rather than using blogger. WordPress is really awesome…

    Can you explain in detail both how to back up with my present status quo situation for my site within blogspot and secondly how to shift to wordpress and how much money will have to be paid for maintaining a site with wordpress. regards

    I agree backing up your blog is very important. A lot of hosting companies backup your site but if your site changes lots then you may have lots to lose if your site backup was a long time ago.
