Solution : This iPad cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device is not started

June 6, 2010 by Amit Bhawani 2 Comments

When we connect the Apple iPad to my Windows based computer, it gives the following error while the iTunes Application is run, which says – ‘This iPad cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device is not started’. This error was never seen when we used to connect the Apple iPhone and this seems to be some kind of new error and Apple’s support website does not have a direct solution for this, hence we need to try out some other fixes to make this to work.

iTunes Mobile Device Error

First you need to close the iTunes Application and disconnect the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch device from your computer. Next click on the Windows Start Button and search for ‘Services’. Under the Programs Section available on the top of the search results, click on ‘Services’.

Windows Search Services

Under the Services application you will find multiple services listed there, where in you need to search for ‘Apple Mobile Device’ and click on it. Then you will find a option to Start the service or stop if its already running in the background list of applications.

Start Apple Mobile Device Service

Once the service has been started you will have to run the iTunes Application again and connect your Apple device to make synchronize it. In our case this problem came up because of Soluto Software which delayed or disabled this service.

Note : For Windows XP you need to visit Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services to fix this problem.

Thanks a ton – I had no idea what iTunes was talking about and was very thankful to find this quick fix when I googled the problem.
