March 10, 2010 by Yogesh Patel

BSNL EVDO takes the further step in EVDO evolution as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has announced  the launch of BSNL EVDO with speed upto 3.1 Mbps for Rs 750. Previously we have wrote about BSNL EVDO with which we used to get 2.4 Mbps speed covering 700 cities in India, get some more details about Rs 750 unlimited plan service. As most of you know that BSNL EVDO Data cards are known for their fast speed and downloads among wireless broadband services, BSNL EVDO are still the best data cards with amazing speed.

Now with introduction of new plans Rs 750 per month of BSNL EVDO card you get a peak speed upto 3.1 Mbps with unlimited downloads and browsing which comes with all India free roaming to stay you connect with Internet no matter in which part of India you are. This unique plan is only applicable in postpaid plans  and this is valid for people who apply for activation before March 31st 2010. Don’t worry, there is more news for Prepaid Plans which says you are charged Rs 0.05 for per 100 Kb i.e., for 1Mb browsing or downloads you are charges Rs 1. But, the offer for Postpaid customer with unlimited speed is really excellent and hurry up as this a promotional offer till 31st March 2010.

Other plans for Postpaid customer of BSNL EVDO remains unaltered and so now the BSNL EVDO plans are available among the following plans:

Plan 1 – 199 per month with free usage of 0.5 GB
Plan 2 – 299 per month with free usage of 1 GB
Plan 3 – 449 per month with free usage of 2 GB
Plan 4 – 649 per month with free usage of 5 GB
Plan 5 – 750 per month with unlimited usage

Note that charges beyond free usage will be levied as Rs 0.50 per MB which excludes from the unlimited Rs 750 plan.

So if you are using BSNL EVDO with speed limit then you can go with 750 per month plan(Plan 5) which gives you independence from usage limits & take credit to enjoy unlimited broadband with your wireless broadband services.

The EVDO rates vary from city to city. For example, my friend in Pune pays 750 Rs for Unlimited plan and I play 500 Rs per month for unlimited plan in Nasik. Kerala has 600 Rs (not too sure about this). I wonder why rates are different in each city?

this is a marketing strategy of companies. they vary prices according to the spending power of the particular city. i have seen this trend with airtel, reliance also in couple of cities. they do it to attract maximum users as every city does not have equal spending powers.

Bsnl offers you 256kbps at Rs 750 if iam not wrong, which means that your speed for downloads would be around 30kbps only. Hence you cannot expect more speed than this.

you might not be able to get bsnl evdo there since delhi & mumbai are under the mtnl zone & mtnl does not provide this service. U might go for tata photon or reliance netconnect,But the unlimited plan by bsnl in amazing (no worries of bill) & if u r close to d tower u feel really lucky.

u can opt from both the options
      1. u can get it for one time payment i.e u purchase card for Rs.(3500+180 tax) one time activation charge Rs.500 (which will add to first bill)
      2. u can get it on rental basis for a security deposit of Rs.1000(refundable) & monthly rental @Rs200/mth would b charged to u (here also u will have to pay 1 time activation charge of Rs 500 with d 1st bill & minimum rental period is 3month)

I recently took this BSNL 3G 3.1mbps @ 750/-. I applied for it but they called me and told me that there is only purchase option and no rental. I bought it for 3500/- and the speed sucks…………..it is not even 10%. it is unlimited but no speed at all for normal usage. Imagine a situation where u want to wait for hours to see a youtube video. If you are looking for a download wireless internet… this is a good selection. But if you have to work and get things done on time… look for Reliance or TATA or MTS will be better. I am not sure about limited BSNL connection – planning to try that soon.

BSNL EVDO cards are available in Bhopal for sure, but when I’m asking them for available plans they are telling me 2.4 Mbps at Rs. 750. I’m confused, on internet they are saying 3.1 Mbps at Rs. 750. Also the BSNL executives didn’t know anything about such plan is this plan for real or the BSNL is just ignoring us.

If anyone purchased 3.1 Mbps plan in Bhopal please reply me.

there is one problem with bsnl guys that most of them are not aware of the latest updates of there own compony so dont worry the new system has been upgraded to support & provide speed upto 3.1 mbps in most of the part of the country but most of the people in bsnl r not aware of this things u just go to bsnl exchange near new market & ask the commercial or d marketing officer about the speed thing they might b having the wright information.

Always better to start with a new comment. Pl comment in good english, so that one can understand and give u perfect reply. Postpaid is better than prepaid in all terms. If u take rental in consideration, prepaid is little higher than postpaid. Tata photo is a good one and for unlimited they have fair usage policy which means after downloading ur limit i.e., 12 or 15 gb the speed sucks to 256 kbps. and check the speed also at ur place with a demo with tata. Think about all these and proceed.k

I am from Bhopal. At 30 March evening BSNL called me that EVDO now available and you can come tomorrow and purchase.

Please note who are willing to purchase BSNL EVDO.

They said they are giving old evdo card @750 unlimited. New sim based card is available but system in not accepting bookings so we can not provide new sim based data card.

Old non sim based data card only support 2.4 MBPS speed and soon will be out from market.
New cdma sim based micromax data card is best choice that support amazing 3.1 MBPS speed and wide coverage area.

Why they are giving old data card not new. The reason is simple they are willing to sell all old data card first then start selling new card. They have large inventory of old data card in stock.

They sold new data card for 2-3 days in feb but then stopped selling. My friend was lucky he bought new data card in that period. The new card provide amazing speed and wide coverage. He was able to use new card in sanchi, vidisha, jabalpul, gwalier without any compromise in speed. so the new card has wide coverage area then the older 2.4 MBPS card.

I suggest don’t buy until they start selling new cards.

  23. Mubashir tech guru says

    April 2, 2010 at 4:39 am

The bsnl in March 2009 started here in j and k srinagar city providing offering 2.4 mbps speeds only in srinagar city sorroundings only.my friend was ist to get it,the speeds were fast,as we got nfs game 2.17 GB download in just one hour.i 2 purchased evdo card in 4,000.but bsnl officer told me that u r not comming in Evdo coverage area bu t would soon provide it in ur area one year passed nothing happened.my plan is 350 unlimited via cdma 1x ,with speed 144 kbps not at regular intervals.after one month my friend told me that he is getting the same speed via EVDO as I’m getting via cdma 144 kbps . When we went complaint about it an newely smart knowing officer told us that it would take us 5 years to provide 2.4mbps as they are offering the EVDO via Rev 0 network as the user base increased our servers started getting overloaded hardly any user gets 300 kbps speed.now in march 2010 we again visited for getting our bills which we never got in 2009 i luckly got my bill 2,000 for 6 months usage.we again got an update that bsnl plans to launch 3G over evdo as they r installing fibre cables every where.i would advise every one not to purchase Evdo as it would take bsnl india 5 years to install Rev A network and supportable internet back bone server base at banglore, gurgawoo, mumbia ,delhi, and at amritsar.i would advice u 2 use gprs or airtel 899 unlimited plan which is better as they upgrading internet backbone every 6 months.BSNL Will waste u money.

  24. Mubashir tech guru says

    April 2, 2010 at 5:06 am

Another thing about Evdo in the india is that it is not officially launched in most parts of india.only chenai is the only state where it has been launched officially they have already instally Rev A network and is working better.and there is no customer care as usuall when a company officially launch a product customer care service is alwaz provided.with bsnl evdo there is no one to help if a trouble occours.and most of exchanges don’t have the controll over internet server backbone.due to ur complaint can’t be rectified in 24 hours.BSNL IS LOOTING its customers with this joke 2.4 mbps every where .we hope in the next three something is going to be happen.what i observed in srinagar our conection get down at 11 am to 1.00pm as they r upgradding network with slow pace, when we call to bsnl they tell us that server is down from banglore backbone.tata photon and Reliance r the 2 majar gaints in Evdo powered by Qualcom but they have no unlimited plans as they always provid the caps ofgb download limit .airtel is the best providing 899 unlimited with 1mbps in selected zones so if ur the lucky one to get this must have.we tested airtel broadband in delhi durring our visit to over relatives.

If u get that speed or atleast 1 mbps I think its a miracle. Better u go for bsnl home ul750 combo which is rent free telephone + 512 kpbs (As I am replying little late) upload download speed.

evdo device will not work in delhi region.
because bsnl has no coverage area in delhi.
      delhi region is under mtnl.
i have asked from bsnl office.they tell me it is not available in delhi & mumbai.so u can try tata, reliance, virgin, mts, mtnl datacard.

In some cities, they are providing old ZTE card which support upto 2.4MBPS speed while new micromax data card support speed upto 3.1 mbps.

Do you guys have any idea in difference. Is ZTE support roaming? ZTE does not uses sim card while Micromax card uses cdma sim.. Does it make difference in connectivity in roaming? Please share ur experience.

first of all i want to tell about that evdo does not work in delhi & mumbai.
pl mention ur city.i know only that speed depends on the area how many users are accessing net.when there are lot of users, speed can be drastically slow but above 256 or 512 kbps.
when there are less no of users, speed can be above 1mbps or 1.5mbps.

No brother, don’t do it. The speed in wireless is not a standard one. What u have is wired one which gives u a constant speed. I had very bad experience with evdo. The speed is very slow. I don’t know about 3G card. U can do one thing. Just call bsnl office and ask for a demo. BSNL Officer will attend and give u a demo. Just check the speed. Because wireless speed is vary from one place to another. Just try and Good luck.

Brother, what kind of netconnect u are looking for? Wired one or wireless. As far as i am concerned wired one will give u a constant speed. For this u should have bsnl landline connection. If u dont have go for one with combo plan which will save u landline rental. For tariff and other details just click this link http://www.bsnl.co.in/service/dataone_tariff.htm . If u would like to go for wireless then go for 3G data card which is available with bsnl offices for 2500 bucks. There are 2 kinds of data cards available in bsnl. One is standalone. another is triband card which costs 4333. Just go for 2500 card (Pl check with your bsnl office for availability). The rental varies from one place to another. I dont know from where u r?

Triband means the data card which works on three different bandwidths. Standalone which works on a particular bandwidth.

Dude, this is because u r not getting proper coverage. One more suggestion is that try to move ur laptop or desktop to open area. Bcz wireless signal will be far better in open area rather than a closed one. This will help u to get good signal.

      Green light – Good signal
Yellow or Orange – Medium or low
      Red – No signal

Those who r interested to buy evdo or any other private wireless connections, b4 buying, first have a demo. Buy only if satisfied with the speed.

    • Kini says

      July 12, 2010 at 6:19 pm

As I mentioned earlier in this blog, try to move his laptop to open area where he gets full signal.
I have also requested all those who buy wireless connections, that they should go for a demo before they buy. I request U all first select the type of wireless, next see the availability, next see the plans which they offer, next go for a demo and if satisfied then proceed.
Onething I would like to mention here is, you will not get UNLIMITED PLANS, other than BSNL in wireless. Nobody will feed when u are hungry (BSNL is also not exceptioal). Just keep thin in ur mind. All these operators are there to make money. They are not interested what u get. They are interested only how much they benefitted. Just read their FAIR USAGE POLICY.

I am sorry that I have not come to ur point. Regarding speed, as I mentioned earlier try to place ur modem on open space (with and extension cable of 1.5 m with one end connected to ur pc and the other end to the modem). As BSNL is upgrading their towers, ur friend may get good speed in a couple of months.

As I mentioned earlier in this forum, pl mention from where u r. This will help us Bcz BSNL is upgrading their towers in many metropolitans as well as in rural areas.

The speed and disconnection due to the network. I think he is more than 100 mts. away from the BSNL tower.

    • Kini says

      July 13, 2010 at 5:02 pm

I don’t think so. The towers are upgrading in metros. U can check with ur bsnl office. Upgradation will be done when there is huge inflow. Remember onething, nobody will feed u unless they get somthing from u. And these operators are there to make business and not for charity. Unless there is no huge demand for their product, they don’t move a step ahead. Think about all those olden days, when BSNL was the only service provider in telecom industry. They use to charge 15 to 50 bucks per minute for STD.

      August 3, 2010 at 12:25 pm

Dude, U r wrong. U have not given any details.

BSNL prices are very competitive if u compare to private service providers. U might have been charged rental + installation charges in ur first bill.

From ur 2nd bill u get 750 + rental (if modem on rental) and 10.3% taxes.

Regarding signal I have requested all those b4 buy go for demo and check the connectivity, speed etc. satisfied then proceed. The solution try to move ur desktop or laptop to open space and try i.e., if ur in a room the signal strength will be 50% of what u have to get. Bcz u r covered 4 sides. Try move to ur pc nearer to window or door or ur hall or varanda.

I agree the Service is a poor part in BSNL. Bcz BSNL baboos are not interested what they paid for.

      August 5, 2010 at 2:55 am

      Dear Das,

Since u r in unlimited plan, if u change ur device, the plan will be same.

Regarding speed I have tested with 2.4 & 3.1, wherein 3.1 is much advanced device and the speed is also good if u compare to 2.4. Pl note that the speed depends on ur signal. If u r nearby to bsnl tower then speed will be excellent.

Onemore thing if u go for 3.1 ur 2.4 will be a waste one. There is no replacement or exchange in BSNL. What u can do is u can sell it to a third party.

To get 3.1 u have to contact BSNL office from where u bought 2.4. U can also ask bsnl guys to give a demo if u have any doubt regarding speed. Just call bsnl customer care and ask for demo. BSNL officer will attend and give u a demo.

Dear Alok, Sorry for the delay. This wireless technology always depend on the towers. U won’t get wired broadband speed in this wireless connection. They say 3.1, but actual speed is very less. Just have a demo first then proceed. I am not much thorough about mtnl.
There r 2 kinds of evdo cards available. One is single band and the other is triband. As the technology in India which runs now on single band better u go for single band card which costs around 2500/- (bsnl rate) and triband costs u around 3,600 (I don’t know the exact rate). Hi, As u said its very difficult to tackle these bsnl(mtnl) babus. I had a bad experience. U can do one thing. Just visit ur mtnl office and contact JE or AE and they will help u out. I don’t know for which purpose u are using this instrument. If u are on roaming always then this is very useful. Or else u can go for wired broadband, where the speed is good. I am having 2 broadband and one EVDO connection. I use EVDO only when my broadband sucks. Frankly speaking MTS and BSNL as well as tata are operating on CDMA technology. That’s why the speed is good. I think MTS is not having proper towers. In that case the instrument will search the nearest tower. If the tower is within 100 to 200 m range, then u will get full signal (5 indicative lines), if its more than that then u get 3 indicative lines. Just think, if u really need this wireless or wired one.

Sister, What I feel is bsnl is good in all terms. In Bangalore evdo works fine. Average speed depends on the distance between ur place & tower. As i said earlier if its less than 200mtrs then u get good speed. Rent 750/- + Modem rent 200 + taxes 10.3%. If u buy modem which costs 2500 (single band) or 3500+ (triband) then there is no modem rental. U have to pay 750+ taxes pm. And this is unlimited and speed limit is also unlimited and there is no conditions apply. Better u go for 2500 modem.
If u go for private operators then I suggest u can go for MTS which is having a very good speed and rental is less if u compare to tata proton or reliance. But these private operators are having conditions apply, that is u get first 12 gb or 15 gb @ 3.1 mbps and rest will @ 256 kbps i.e., when ur ul/dl limit reaches 12gb or 15 gb, the speed sucks to 256 kbps.

Above all before proceed have a demo and personally I feel, if u r nearby any bsnl exchange, then BSNL IS BEST. GOOD LUCK

Even there are few incidents that few customers are getting signals beyond this range. U can go for a demo and proceed. There may be another tower which u dont know. Pl visit ur nearest bsnl office for details. Be sure, have a demo then proceed.

No refund under any circumstances. If u still want 2 go for that, u can have a choice of rental or purchase. U can go for rental. If u satisfied with the speed u can purchase the instrument in the later stage. If not happy just return the instrument to bsnl.

BSNL website says EVDO works at ur place. Don’t go on the nearest tower. I think u thought about nearest exchange tower. There are few towers (hidden) which are constructed on the building top. Just visit ur nearest bsnl office and have a demo at ur place, where u want 2 use ur instrument. It may work. Usually EVDO working range for good signal is 200 mts.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:55 pm

BSNL EVDO says 3.1 Mbps, I did not crossed 256Kbps of my browsing speed. Better go for some private provider like Airtel, TATA etc. This BSNL after connection they least bothered about service.

    • Kini says

      October 21, 2010 at 4:49 pm

Dude, U have not informed about the instrument. Apart from cdma 1x, there are 2 evdo instruments which supports 2.4 & 3.1 mbps. This EVDO (Evolution-Data Optimized / Evolution-Data) is a telecommunications standard for the wireless transmission of data through radio signals, typically for broadband Internet access. Hence, there is no guarantee of speed, as this totally depends on the tower signal.

U r getting 256 kbps or kBps(KBps) wherein B stands for bytes and lower case b stands for bits. Therefore, 8b = 1B (8 bits = 1 Byte). Pl check that. If u get 256 kBps then u get around 2mbps (bsnl states that upto 3.1 mbps and not mBps) which is a reasonable speed.

To improve speed move your evdo nearer to a window. If u have installed in a closed room, u will get only 50% of the signal. Try to move it to open space like hall.

Before switching over to a private operator, just think twice. And dont forget to have a demo.

      Dear Sallu,

Most of these connections are working on the signal and usage. If more users are logging at a time or use in the same tower, then ur speed will be less. Don’t think in years about the speed. Cos everyday technology changes. Earlier they use to give 2 mbps, later 3.1 and now bsnl is giving 7.1 mbps (subject to availability and the speed of ur evdo).

Hi kini, recently, bsnl scrapped its 3g unlimited plans(2500 fr 2 mnts n 4200 fr 6 mnts w.e.f feb 2011). So, bcoz of dis, most bsnl 3g subscribers r like lost sheep as if bsnl cheated dem.

    Dear Kiran,

To attract subscribers and to increase their subscription base, bsnl announced that the plan is valid till feb 11. But they have not said they r going 2 scrapt it. If u have already bought 3g wait till ur subscription ends. Then think about it. Bcoz evdo not as good as 3g or wired broadband. One more is u have to buy evdo card which costs u arount 2.5k bucks. Next is rental which is again 50 bucks more. i.e., 750 + 10.3% taxes = around 830 bucks. As u r a student u don’t have to go for evdo or 3g connection as they are used by those who are on move. finally wired connection is far better than these 2 connections. BSNL unlimited broadband charges 7500 bucks+taxes, if u opt for annual payment. Thereby u save 1500 bucks.

Private operator says FUP (Fair Usage Policy) which means u get full speed to a particular limit of download, thereafter the speed sucks. But there is no such limitations in BSNL. Before proceed think about

      1. Your present datacard which has no value.
      2. You have to buy a new data card from bsnl
and also check the speed of bsnl evdo at ur place. Just have a demo at your platform and proceed if satisfied with the speed.

    Dear Kaustuv Das,

Now 3G dongles replaced EVDO. However, for your query, there is 20% discount on postpaid plans for Govt. employees on landline as well as EVDO plans as per BSNL website. Pl enquire nearby Telphone exchange. Personally speaking, the 3G dongles are much better than EVDO only the difference is monthly plan rates.
