Custom Vs Free WordPress Blog Themes : Advantages & Disadvantages

February 2, 2008 by Amit Bhawani

Every blogger who has just started into web blogging keeps changing his website’s theme/design , keep uploading new plugins , wordpress tweaks and trying them out in order to make online money, but the most important question which arises here is that do you have a blog design which is of your choice or a design which is selected by your blogs viewers.

Wow Blog DesignNormally you would search in google for free wordpress themes (or) free premium wordpress themes based on your requirement like 2 column, 3 column or magazine designed wordpress theme and you will find some good themes which may suit your blog but you will never be 100% satisfied with these themes.

Why not invest couple bucks in getting a custom theme? Now this question arises when you are not satisfied by a free/sponsored theme and there are many problems with these free themes like these –

Free Blog Themes Disadvantages :

  1. You cannot use it on your company blog
  2. You wont like to give a link back / credit / sponsored links to the theme designer
  3. You wont be satisfied with the structure or colour patterns of the theme unless its a custom designed theme
  4. You cannot brand a free theme using wordpress blog
  5. You cannot customise it completely because of the coding problems or precoded layouts
  6. Your visitors/ subscribers cannot remember your blog for its design but may have to bookmark it if its useful, other hand if your blog has a custom theme many of your visitors may remember your blog because of the design or logo.
  7. The themes you use wont be unique, hence you wont be able to attract first time visitors to your blog in order to make them subscribe

Free Blog Themes Advantages :

  1. Free themes are always free and you will just need to link back to the designer from the footer which is not much pain.
  2. You have a ultimate level of choice of wordpress themes which you can select from based on structures like 1,2,3,4 and 5 column wordpress themes.
  3. Theme developers keep updating their themes to keep them out of bugs when new version of wordpress are released regularly, to make sure you dont find any bugs on the front end.
  4. You will never has to make any payment for these themes and will be allowed to customise them.

Custom Blog Themes Disadvantages :

  1. Where a free blog design can be completely free and costs you ranging from 100$ to 2000$ based on the designer, their brand, your requirement in terms of coding etc.
  2. You will need to contact your theme designing/coding company whenever there is a wordpress/cms upgradation and you will need to get your custom theme working to the latest coding updates.

Custom Blog Themes Advantages :

  1. These themes are completely unique and are always appretiated by your visitors.
  2. Your first time visitors will love to move around some of your pages of your blog and may get satisfied with the content and subscribe to your blogs feed.
  3. A Custom theme may help you create a brand because these normally suit to your main company website or the main page and you can port the same theme into your blog.
  4. Since these themes are unique your blog will be viewed in a different view and the visitors will stick for some time, because its not just another wordpress theme.
