Stop Automatic Sync on Apple iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

June 10, 2010 by Amit Bhawani

Whenever i connect any of the Apple Devices be it Apple iPad, iPhone or iPod all of which i own, i find that the iTunes application starting syncing it and because of this the computer gets slower and also i cannot access my device for a few minutes. Initially it syncs and then starts taking a backup of all the data which is loaded in the device. Is it possible to make sure that the Automatic sync is temporarily stopped or permanently stopped?

The options of syncing the data with your device and the computer is actually something which is useful to the users because you can always have a backup of all the music, photos, podcasts, videos and applications. Though this can also be a issue to users who regularly connect their devices. Here are a few options you can implement to disable the automatic sync option and re-enable it in the future whenever you want to.

iTunes Devices Sync Automatically

Connect the Apple device to your computerer and run the iTunes Application. Next under the iTunes Edit > Preferences > Devices , you will find all the devices and the backups which were previously generated earlier on your computer. Next Check on the option ‘Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically box’.

I checked the ‘Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically box’ and the ipad STILL starts to synch and backup at every connection. backup usually produces a failure message at the very end (after 8 hours) and the circus starts again. I cannot update to the newer software, because it always starts the backup… anyone has the same problem?

I have this check box checked but it still starts to auto sync every time i plug in my iphone. If I do not unplug quickly it deletes all my 675 contacts from the phone. Fortunately I am able to use the restore function to get back my contacts, but if phone is still connected after the restore the sync starts again and deletes the contacts. This is a new computer W7 with new install of itunes 10. I have tried unchecking the box, restarting itunes, restarting the computer, un and reinstalling itunes. Is there a way of to back up my contacts without itunes?
