Guide on how to Copyright or Copy Protect your Content

December 25, 2007 by Amit Bhawani 10 Comments

Copyright LicenceThere are many a times when many of my websites original content was copied by others and this gave my websites a lot of revenue loss. The point is that when you write some content on your own which is not copied then you have some rights over it and no one can copy it. There are several ways to save your content from getting copied , here are some :

Copyright Logo CFirst step is to disable right click feature on your website or blog, using which most users just select the text area and copy and paste. This feature makes many users move away from your website thinking they cannot copy and the page is protected. In case of normal websites based on static HTML pages add this code in your tag – which will disable the right click Copyright Agreementmenu for the user on your pages. In case of a wordpress blog use a plugin like this which when activated works instantly and right click wont work on any pages of your blog. You can find a live demo on this blog itself.

Even after setting up the No-Right click option on your pages the copycats would just view source and copy the content but the No-Right click option would be a problem to general users when they want to use the right click feature for viewing some property, bookmarking or printing feature.

Another option would be making a Image format of your content so no one can copy it. Just take a screenshot of the text version and publish the image on your website. Though this option would not help you in getting traffic from the search engines because the search engine spiders cannot index it.

PDF format is another option where you can offer your website visitors with a PDF version of your content which cannot be easily copied because PDF files are hard to be extracted by a normal user , unless he knows how to get convert PDF files to word format.

Creative CommonsCreative Commons ReservedCreative Commons Licence

You can warn others from copying your content by displaying Creative Commons Licence which will allow then to use your work but with some conditions which they need to accept.

Copyscape BannerAnother option would be to add a Copyscape banner on your website and regularly check your pages using the copyscape website plagiarism search tool and find copied pages of your content and emailing the website owners to remove the copied content from their website, you can find the whole list of copyscape banners here.

I Hope this complete guide would be helpful to you on how to protect your useful data from being copied and ways to handle these content copy thefts. Also in case your content is copied by another website owner and if does not reply to your emails in order to remove the content dont forget to contact Cyber Crime Department which can help you on how to proceed to punish the content copycats.

Useful tips Amit. What to do with people re-writing the whole story in their own language?

Amit it’s good way to avoid the information or article from been copied and the best example is to check through the service provided by the http://www.copyscape.com which tells the domain using the content which belongs to you. And from there you can trace out the domain using your content and can politely request the webmaster to remove your content.

You should send a email politely to the blogger who copied your content, if no reply then contact the web host and also send a DMCA Notice to the blogger.
