How to Access File System of iPhone

May 30, 2009 by Tony Stark

In order to install custom themes or changing carrier logo you need to have the complete access of your iPhone file system. Before getting started make sure you have a Jailbreaked iPhone with Cydia already installed. If you haven’t Jailbreaked your iPhone follow our guide here. Once you Jailbreaked launch Cydia and install BSD Subsystem. Once BSD finishes to install search Cydia for OpenSSH and install it also. SSH (secure shell) is a network protocol that allows data to be exchanged over a secure channel, in this case between a computer and your iPhone. Once you installed the both OpenSSH and BSD we can start the procedure. iPhone and computer need to be on the same Wireless Network generally your home network.

Now we need a SSh program which interacts between both iPhone and your computer we have a couple of free options for Windows and Mac machine download them with the links given below.

Download Required :

  • WinSCP For Windows
  • CyberDuck For Mac

Now we have a Jailbreaked iPhone with OpenSSH and BSD Subsystem installed. We also have WinSCP or CyberDuck as SSH program and both iPhone and Computer are connected on same wireless network. If you satisfies all these conditions we can move forward to gain full access of your iPhone by following the steps given below.

  • Note of your iPhone’s IP address from Settings > WiFi and tap on the blue arrow to the right of the name of your home network.  In the next screen you can find the IP Address of your network.

  • Now Launch your SSH program in this example we have used WinSCP.  WinSCP will redirect  you to a new ‘Session’ screen while in Cyberduck, you’ll need to choose ‘Open New Connection’. In the next screen you need to fill the following information

Hostname or Server = Type your iPhone’s IP address in this field
Username = Type ‘root’ (without the quotes) in this field
Password = Type ‘alpine’ in this field (without the quotes) or whatever you have

File Protocol = Should be SCP on WinSCP and SFTP on Cyberduck

  • Fill the information and hit the login button and you will see a confirmation message asking if you will accept key exchange / connection with the device with the iPhone’s address.Voila you have done it now you gains the full access of your iPhone file system.

    Hi

I would like to find someone that can develop an application (for windows/other desktop OS)that can “burn” songs and other media to iphones / IPODs of all kinds(in a shop/kiosk). when users return home they should work as usuual with their iTunes, without having all their content erased.
as i understand the challenge is twofold: apple’s encription of file access and iTunes synchronization. users not neccesarily have jailbrake iphone.
can you help? do you know someone who is expert in this area?
    Thanks
    Guy
