How to create a SubDomain in Shared Hosting

May 9, 2008 by Amit Bhawani

Since i run a web hosting company and many new webmasters keep reading this blog, i have been asked about this many a time. Recently Santhana Gopal owner of Satellite TV News asked me the same question. His doubt was on how to create a Sub Domain in a shared hosting account and how to get access to it using ftp software. Here is a small tutorial.

First of all a Sub Domain is a part of the main domain but in terms of SEO, its completely a new domain name and you need to start from beginning for attaining SERPS. There are many other advantages and disadvantages of using Sub Domains & Sub Folders

Steps to get started :

  • Login to your Cpanel X Account of your Main Domain Name
  • Search for the Domains Tab > Sub Domains
    Cpanel Sub Domains
  • Once you click on the Sub Domain Option you will be referred to a page where you can Create a Sub Domain, Just give the name of the sub domain in the left side box, and click on Create and your new Sub Domain will be created.
    Create Sub Domain
  • The next window will show you a result of Sub Domain creation.
    Sub Domain Created

Its overall a very easy job to create a new Sub Domain in your main website, and in order to access a Sub Domain you need to login to your main domain’s hosting account and under Public_html you will find a folder[with name of the sub domain] where you can upload the sub domain related files.
