HP Mini 1001 Netbook Review

August 19, 2009 by Amit Bhawani

Couple months back i was looking to purchase a Netbook which would be useful for me while iam on travelling and which would be at a lower end, something which is quite better than my Apple iPhone and would not be as bulky as my Sony Vaio Laptop or the Apple Macbook, which is when i decided to go for a Mini Netbook from HP Compaq and Chetan Bhawani had already blogged about this last month.

Why did i buy a Netbook over a Notebook?
Netbook is something which is far more superior than a Smart Mobile Phone and which is lower in features, price & specifications than normal notebooks. You cannot expect high performance or hardware in Netbooks because these are small computers with small display screens. The battery life is quite better than Notebooks because these devices are having smaller screens and processors to run. Not only this you cannot use a bulky Notebook while you are travelling say on a flight because the normal laptops are generally 2-3Kgs in total and these Netbooks would range in around 1Kg weight which means its a big difference.

Mini 1001 Netbook Features :

The HP Mini 1001 Netbook is a Windows XP based Computer which comes preinstalled unlike other Netbooks which dont come with any Operating System installed and the buyers normally install Linux or a Pirated Version of Windows. The Hard Disk of this Tiny Laptop is quite huge at 60Gb Storage Space with a 1GB Ram which would mean that its a powerful device with a lot of HDD space. The Display Screen is of 9.2″ in total with the keyboard of small size, since the display is small you cannot expect a bigger keyboard. I personally felt that a small keyboard is not for everyone because iam habituated to the normal sized Notebook Keyboards and this small one is not really for me since i keep typing a lot of typos and the location of different keys is quite different and i had to make a note of all the locations of different keys on the keypad.

The HP Mini comes with a inbuilt Wi-Fi for high speed internet access and also with 2 USB Ports to connect with external drives, external CD player or external USB Data Cards. This is because this mini netbook does not have any CD Rom facility since its a small piece and we cannot expect everything in this and you can transfer files from another computer using the Bluetooth or Wifi Facility. One of the best Part is that you get a nice Webcam in this Netbook which is really a good feature for getting into Video Conference, Video Chats, Voice Calls etc while you are on travel allowing you to take quick snapsnots too. Overall these are some professional looking sleek netbooks which looks lot better than the Asus EEE PCs

Pricing of this Netbook :
We originally purchased 2 netbooks of the same model and got different quotes from different Laptop Stores ranging from 20500Rs to 22000Rs and i had paid 20500Rs for my Netbook. You can try out different stores to get the best deal around.

Just stumbled onto your page – I, too, have an HP Mini 1001TU, purchased at about the same time (July 2009). Great netbook, stable and functional. Unfortunately, I have started getting a scratch in my screen from the keyboard – I understand that is typical of this and other HPs. Fortunately, I didn’t have the same trouble getting used to the keyboard … I had an HP Evo N410c previously, and the layout is similar. I wonder how yours is going now that a year has gone by? Cheers – DLT

A very neat netbook. Especially the design part, where HP fabricated a very beautiful external body. Packed within it are some good specifications that can make this netbook into the best list, but the battery life is what questions everyone.
