AS i read that anything we buy less than 10000 then it is free of custom duty.I have read various cases in which the products value is under 10000 and customy duty is charged.

I just sent a package this past month from the United States to New Delhi, India. What a freakin’ nightmare!!!! For starters there is no New Delhi Customs Info on this site. From what I understand this is where it went once it hit India. It went to the Foreign Post Office in India which is in the same building as customs. They kept asking my friend (the recipient) for an Air Bill Number or Bill Number. THERE WAS NO AB number or BILL number. I used USPS International Express Mail Service. THEY DO NOT USE AIR BILL NUMBER BECAUSE THERE ISN”T ONE! You only get a USPS Tracking Number and the Number that is on the customs form you fill out. Only some courier services use the AB #. Apparently, those who work there (Customs or Foreign P.O.) don’t know what they are doing. A word to the wise about USPS, they REALLY disappointed me! They have you pay for 3-5 day service, but they can’t guarantee anything once the pkg. is in the hands of the other country! What the hell? One thing I suggest is having USPS start an investigation on the day they tell you is the earliest you can start one. I did that earlier than I really felt necessary but, why wait. Get someone on things right away. When they do the investigation, they actually have contact with the other Country to get a status. Then you can contact the appropriate people on your side. You have to call and call. If they don’t deliver it, it’s supposed to be returned to sender not just sitting in limbo!!!! I am going to write another reply with phone #’s in it. Good Luck!

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO TO CUSTOMS TO PAY ANY FEES. They will be collected from you by your local post office.

We have 3 urgent cartons being held in New Delhi, they were sent from a factory in the North of India to New Delhi via DHL on Sat 5th March on a 48hr delivery to London, the sports items inside are needed for an event in London on Sat 12th therefore we will still have a chance for them to be ready in time if we get them with us on Friday 11th, We are being told by DHL that customs can hold them for as long as they wish with no reason or explanation, now surely if they wanted to check them they would have had the opportunity to do so more than twice!
Please what can we do to help push this terrible situation forward and get the items released.
All paper work is correct as we haqve been told by DHL and our sender.
You have posted a contact number for customs 01123236739 and you also state do not contact them, our shipment is coming by air so will be an airport.

Tina, I did not use a courier service. I used USPS so that is the only one I can speak of. What I said about the airport, was NOT to go to customs AT THE AIRPORT. That is to check passengers packages. Obviously, I didn’t see this in time. So there is no need to go any further with this. It is my understanding that when you use a courier, they somewhat hand carry through customs which is how they can guarantee delivery by a certain date and time. I don’t understand how customs ended up in sole possession of your packages. I feel like I am missing something here…….

Bilal, first let me tell you I am a woman. Don’t feel bad, it’s hard to tell with foreign names. Do you know the person in Arizona that sent this to you? If so, they need to call the United States Postal Service at 1-800-275-8777 (1-800-ASK-USPS) and ask them to start an investigation. There is no charge and they take is very seriously. Tanya Jain~if you just sent it through regular mail, no tracking, no insurance, no return to sender if undeliverable there is nothing you can do. No sense in visiting any one because you have no trackable info to give any one. I’m sorry to tell you but unless it should just show up, It’s a loss. NEVER send anything of value or out of your country without insurance or some way of tracking and there are several.

Tanya, It would likely help if you went there (the FPO) with all information you have. They were able to give my friend latest info on his package. Ask them when they think it will be going to your local post office, because that is the next stop. Then local post office will deliver to you and collect and fees necessary at that time. If someone from customs opened your package and took your item, you would be able to file a complaint and start an investigation because you know which agency had is last. I don’t think that is likely the problem though. Just make sure you don’t lose any info that you have about your package. For example your custom’s label number, write in down in more than one place. Without your info you won’t get anything done. Good Luck to you! Cindy

Therefore I want to tell u that bilal ahmed’s parcel (the person u have replied above) was sent by first class international mail which is UNTRACKABLE just like my parcel.
As u can see his parcel ID initiates with letters ” LC ” which means LOCAL COURIER.
I think he can’t go for investigation as it needs the trackable no. and the parcel should be sent within U.S.A……
If am not correct, plz let me know so I can also go for an investigation under USPS deptt.
Tanya, He obviously got a status result when he typed in his his lable #. There are things he could have done to that package that made is trackable. If he added insurance (which you should have done) or sent is signed receipt or registered. All of these are trackable first class mail. With out doing a whole lot of investigating which I can’t do right now, that’s the best I can do. They don’t put those numbers on there for nothing. You can call the 800 # that I listed for USPS and they can help you right away. Cindy

Guarav~It’s not just based on the total value of the package. There are different catagories for different items. Therefore, the % of the value due can be different for everything on the package. Understand? You have to see what percentage of the total value of each item in the package is. Then there’s the question of whether or not it or any part of it is a gift. Too many variables for someone to guess at. You can look at India Customs on line and it will tell you all of these things. That way you can look up the items and calculate it yourself, and even then, customs could see things differently. Not much help I know, sorry,

I did this stupidity because one of the employee of USPS post office told me that,,

Tanya~ Something of this value has to be more than a letter, which means it’s a package, which means is has to go through customs. Did you fill out a customs form? If so you have the number off of that. Hopefully you kept your copy. Call the Foreign Post Office and give them the customs number. They should be able to guide you from there. I have posted that number along with numbers to customs. If this is not a package, simply a letter that would not go through customs, I am afraid you have no options. It’s my hope that it is a package and you have a customs number. Please let me know what happens. Best Wishes! Cindy

I sent a package from Canada using Canada Post on March 4th. It arrived in India customs on March 12th. It has been stuck there ever since.

Roxane~The numbers that I posted are correct. You will need to have the person in India start doing the work now. Give them all your mailing info. Customs form number, tracking number, and if there is an AB or Air Bill number (I think that is what they call it, I used USPS so that’s what I know) Anyway, your person in India needs to contact the Foreign Post Office with that info first. Listen Guys.. Here is how i got an iPHONE 4 from USA.. using USPS..
My friend got an iphone 4 from the the US..
and used USPS Express Mail International..instead of Priority Mail..
this was done because.. Express Mail(EMS) is also there in india.. as
Speed Post Express Mail..
90% of packages are not opened if they are sent through EMS..
And its a guarantee that you will be charged customs if you use private shippers like
DHL, Fed-Ex, UPS..
She marked it as a gift..

shipped through: USPS Express Mail Internation
There are two shipping durations.. one cost: 71$ if you want it in 1 to 3 days
and other is 3-5 days for 35$
I told her to use the 3-5days.. so it cost us 42$ including insurance(half cover of the goodās amount mentioned)
This duration is the time, which it would take for a shippment within USA..
So she sent it on 5th April 2011.. and I received it on 15th April 2011..
No damage will be done to your iPhone as it comes in Box which has Bubble Wrapping..
Post office would have sent it to my home..

I have purchased a couple of console games and a backpack from ebay uk and us sellers. Most of them are under Rs.1500 including shipping and a few which are combined package are about Rs. 10000.
Now, i am concerned whether the the items will attract customs duty or not. They’ve been shipped through Royal Mail (UK sellers) and USPS (US seller). Altogether there are 10 items that i’m getting shipped from Europe and US amounting to Rs.30 K from ebay. They are all special/collector game editions. The break up is like:
1 seller from US – Rs. 11 K
another US seller – Rs. 5.5 K
1 seller from UK – Rs. 10 K
3 different sellers from UK – Rs. 1500 each
So that makes 6 different parcels amounting Rs. 30 K. They are all for personal use. A few items that have been shipped are standard postage and few are signed for Royal mail and USPS priority mail.
Now, please let me know does my merchandise qualify for any criteria on which it can be detained by the customs or levy customs from me ? They are all console game discs as mentioned and strictly for personal use but their costs went up due to ebay bidding process.
If the seller marks the item as gift then would it evade scrutiny from the customs ? Also, non-registered standard shipments, do they risk being stolen in transit before it reaches me ?
I am really very concerned about my parcel, more so as i thought that games dont attract customs but after going through your blog i got jitters.
Please help me out. Also i am based in Noida. So i am clueless whether the goods would come to Delhi or Mumbai ?

It would be in good condition , no doubt about that. Once they clear the package after verifying the contents, you would soon receive a message from your nearest post office about the customs duty fee you will have to pay following which when paid you will get the product shipped.

I send package from US to hyderabad through USPS,the package contains baby formula worth of $150 as a gift.At the time of delivery the local post office asking us to pay customs duty and they told us that the value of that product is calculated as Rs.10000 by customs department in mumbai.But that is not correct and i mentioned the value of the product in customs form and i have all the reciepts which can prove the value of the product.I send baby formula for my child who is in india before also and i never charged any customs for that.
We checked with local post office who hold this package and they ask us to pay the duty amount(Rs.4700).What we have to do now.
How to convey this to customs department and void that duty or how to claim the duty amount later ,if i pay to post office and take delivery.Is it really possible to clain the paid customs amount?
We dont have any contact information of mumbai customs.We found some numbers in internet and no one is picking the phone when we try to reach them.
I appreciate your suggestion in this regard.If you can please provide me any valid mumbai customs contact number?

My story:
I had a small package sent from the US. It was supposed to be sent DHL with a tracking#, it was not.
It was sent via the regular US Post Office with no tracking# (again not how it was supposed to be sent).
It was sent at the end of November and it has still not got here (I am in Pune).
It has my retainer for my mouth. It has no value to anyone else but me!
I need it!
I went to the local Post Office here but they said they did not have it and maybe it was in Mumbai customs. After trying to figure out the right number to contact I finally got in contact with someone there and they asked for a tracking#. I said I didn’t have one, so they could not help me.
Does your company have a service that could work with or encourage the Mumbai customs to find my package?

I purchased a Blackberry phone from USA, which was shipped to India through ‘Priority Mail International Parcels’ #LC536412639US, on 01/18/2012. 2 days back I contacted Indian customs and they told me that this package was never recorded in customs and might not be shipped from USA or stuck somewhere in USA. If it comes to India, it will be recorded in customs and will given the local number.
Kindly suggest me what to do, and where to contact, as I am in loss of $400, please help….

I bought a very high priced commodity through a company in Delhi. The firm has booked my order to the USA through EMS (Speed Post). It has been 15 days since booking my parcel. The latest information from my vendor is that the package is held in the Delhi customs.My vendor is an honest firm with required credentials, however he seems to be unsure as to how to approach the customs in this case. Don’t worry… in another 15-20 days (sometimes less) the local post office will bring the duty receipt at your doorstep. Go to your post office with the cash amount, pay them, sign the customs form / receipt and get your package.

So why this same 2 entries on 2 different dates ? Had it left China or should I be concerned ?

I recently shipped a Black Berry from the US to India (N. Delhi) via regular mail (big mistake). The box reached the destination within 7 days but the BB was missing. Is is possible to recover the BB or is it a wash? Any assistance would be highly appreciated. I did fill out a customs form, would that help?

I had ordered for a product online,and had chosen USPS priority mail delivery (had no other option available).
I tried calling USPS on numbers ( 1800 275 8777 and 1800 222 1811) but not getting through, I dont know anyone in US who could call the USPS on my behalf.
Could anybody provide me with an alternate contact number for USPS and yeah by the way I reside in India.
Also If at all i do not receive my consignment what neccessary steps do I need to take?
How do I follow up with mu oder with USPS and the Indian Customs?

Hi. I need help. I’ve been waiting on a package that was sent from USPS on Nov. 6th. My family accidently put Sri Lanka, India on the address. It said it was cleared through India customs on Nov. 12th. I’ve contacted who I could via New Delhi customs and they were very rude. =( They gave me two numbers which one wasn’t correct, but the guy told me my package would be mailed to the address in Sri lanka. It’s been 3 weeks and I still don’t have it. =( I’ve leaving Sri Lanka in less than a month. Any help would be great. USPS can’t help me b/c they’ve done all they could. I bet my package is still sitting in customs. Ugh.

i sent a parcel via DHL to Mumbai on 20th May 2013. previously when i sent to the same destination it was delivered to the receipient within 5 days. this time it is taking time at Mumbai customs. today is already 27th May 2013. The lastest is that DHL contacted the receipient and said to go there personally with his passport. is this a normal procedure. The items i sent are personal effects like shirts, jeans, cookies, a cake . why do they need him to go there personally?

My parcel is stuck in customs from a long time.
The parcel/package was sent from japan, it included junk/used beyblades (toy). The weight of the package is approximately 15-16Kg
It was sent via Japan EMS. Normally it takes 4 – 8 days for the parcel to reach the destination

I called few numbers and they are trying to route to some other department and it left me nowhere. Their Email suck, 90% have bounced lol… No reply from others..

Should I wait it out? Is the parcel still safe or is it Doomed! What if its sent back to UK š that will be a disaster. Please advice anyone…
