Indian Railway Train PNR Status Enquiry Free 139 Local Number

February 6, 2008 by Amit Bhawani 121 Comments

There are many people who keep searching for Indian Railway PNR Status of their tickets and also keep looking for toll free numbers where they can get passenger information, train information and other details related to their travel.

Indian Railways Enquiry FormNow the Indian Railways department has launched a new phone number for Enquiry, which is a completely free service and works all over india including small villages and towns. You just need to call ‘139’ from your BSNL landlines, MTNL landlines, Dolphin, Garuda, Idea, Spice Telecom and Vodaphone telecom operator enabled phones and get access to SMS, call back and fax facility.

For Delhi and Mumbai residents another advantage is that you can just dial 139xxxxxxxxxx [10 digit ticket PNR number] and 139xxxx[4 digit train number] and get the train ticket PNR and train status instantly.

        Hi Sangamesh,

Your question is quite unclear. I don’t think I ever mentioned that any Train (for that matter) has got some machines installed onto them.

In-case you are asking about IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) the same is installed at the 4 data centers in 4 metro cities and the one which is taking care-off all the South India based calls is installed at Chennai data center.

All calls originating from South India (4 states) are routed to Chennai & finally BSNL brings those calls-in to hit the IVRS installed at Chennai data center for a REAL TIME resolution.

        Thanks

The indian railway website is very very slow and most of the time it shows communication failure. I think they should make the site more reliable and efficient. Many times the amount is deducted but the ticket is not printed. It takes long time to search for the availability in trains. The site is also slow and late as the Indian trains. Also if some train is cancelled passengers should get prior information or tickets should be shifted to other trains on the same route.

The tatkal charges should also be revised and charged on the distance travelled.

There is a solution to this problem.

You can book your e-tickets by calling 139 (select Option # 5 after language selection), All you need to do is buy a ‘Cash Card’ in advance (before calling 139) equal or more than the amount of your ticket. It is safer & less prone to frauds because of limited amount of the Cash Card.

      You need to provide the Call Center Executive (CCE) with all details of your plan of journey, with;
Date of Travel, Train Name / No., Originating Stn. Destination Stn., Name, Age, Sex of Traveler(s) etc. Once the Ticket is confirmed as per your requirement share the Cash Card No. (12 digit No.) & Pin (4 Digit No.). Finally the CCE would ask you if you have an E-mail ID (please share it correctly) & he/she would mail the e-ticket in PDF format.

Just take a Print-out of that ticket & “Happy Journey…!!!”

Otherwise you can get the print-out of the same ticket delivered to your doorstep, by courier in 72 hrs (you have to pay for the Courier charges, show your PAN Card / Dr. Lic / Voter ID card when it is delivered to you at your doorstep).

      All the Best…

      Murari Lal-ji,

139 is accessible from ANY Mobile (GSM & CDMA) & any Land-line all across the country by ALL Operators Officially, WITHOUT using ANY STD code.
Dial 139 to connect to it, this Service was started in year 2008, its the 3rd year running…
I am sure you must be adding STD code before 139 & that’s why you couldn’t connect with 139. Try calling without ANY STD codes as PRE-FIX… OK.

      All the Best.

This way you’ll NEVER get any response, this is the commonest mistake people do, as they Prefix the STD code of the city & then dial 139.

139 is a No. which is supposed to be dialed directly…

      Hi Rajesh,

As you have rightly mentioned, those are the information you are getting on 139 currently. I appreciate your concern, but it must reach the right people…

The mentioned information are relayed to the caller thru’ IVRS, based on the information coming from the back end of CRIS (whatever they have on their database servers) on REAL TIME basis.

There is no information pertaining to Platform or Reservation Chart (which I believe is created at the LAST MOMENT) thus I would advice if you may please put it up on the website (under ‘Feedback’):

      http://www.trainenquiry.com/Feedback.aspx

So that Railway Authorities come to know what ‘Public’ needs…& if they add those information on the CRIS servers & start relaying them onto 139, then 139 service would be able to share the same with you and many more who require it…

      All the Best…

Accessing 139 while being on ROAM is very much possible, but it completely depends on your Mobile Service Provider’s relation with that location’s (where you are on Roaming) Service Provider. if they do not have ROAMING Relationship for 139 service then you might not be able to call 139 while being on ROAM-ing…

You need to check with the Customer Care of your Mobile Service Provider if they have any such relationships (you need to mention the area / location where you expect this service on Roaming.

      139 was / is NEVER Toll Free…

It is a Public Utility Service thru’ which ‘Public’ is supposed to get vital information pertaining to their journey. This No. can not be Toll FREE until & unless the Ministry of Railways decide to take up the cost associated with it, which is humongous & by doing so Railways would again start going in great Losses, which they are saving due to their PPP (Public Private Partnership) model. Where currently IRCTC is not spending a single rupee.

The moment Ministry would make it Toll Free the services would become pathetic as it used to be earlier when the CCEs/Agents of Railways’ own Call Centers had tremendous Attitude & they never felt like answering calls amicably or completely, they used to Bang their phones down without giving proper information to the callers, leaving them grossly dissatisfied…

Well, that’s upto the Govt. to decide how they would like to take it forward & ‘may be’ in a longer run it would virtually waste our hard earned money (the money we pay as INCOME TAX) by ending up in poor results & dissatisfaction of ‘Masse’ / ‘Jantaa’… Until & Unless their approach is VERY SYSTEMATIC & CONSISTENT…

139 is not a free service. It is chargeable to your phone number no meaning of landline / mobile /BSNL or any other operator.
Response is very slow, hence high traffic, irritation during urgency. May be considered as wastage of time, efforts, money by users. And incase of Railway, no need to comments on any goverment undertaking, peoples feel / knows that better.

Dear Sir, as you mentioned IRCTC provided a toll free number 139 fo know our current pnr status which i called but i charged Rs 2.445min(i’m using vodafone). If they r charging us to know our pnr status then why they r giving this one as toll free number.

    Thank you.

    Folks,
139 service is a Level-1 (Public Utility) service as designated by DoT, thus EVERY Telecom Operator is BOUND to open it to its Subscribers all across India. If ANY of you face any 139 connectivity related issues contact your Service Provider/Operator’s Customer Care immediately, as it is the right of every Citizen & Visitors to the Nation.

Further about the Authenticity of the information provided on 139, either on IVRS (at Data Center) or by Human Agents (as Call Center) is completely dependent on the Real-time / Updated information relayed / shared by CRIS (Center for Railway Information System). If any of you find any difference / in-correct information being shared please contact the Railway Authorities, as the 139 service is run by a third party (whom IRCTC has completely outsourced it) who are not supposed to be held for the Authenticity portion of the information provided on 139.

IRCTC / Railways ought to come ahead to support this service by owning the responsibility of sharing the 100% accurate data/information with the 139 service provider, so that they can RELAY the same to the MASSE /Public & help everyone enjoy the benefits of this service completely…

This No. 139 is NOT TOLL FREE at all, it is a PAID No.

Further a new number is coming up which is with Premium Enquiry Services and with premium charges as well, which is supposed be come in effect from 1st Nov 2010, if everything goes well.

    Just FYI…

139 (Basic Enquiry Service) supports the following services (it is NOT TOLL FREE) on IVRS & Human Agents both:

    1. PNR Status
    2. Train Timings (Current train running positions)
    3. Reservation availability (except for Tatkaal seva)
    4. Train fare enquiry
    5. Accident & related information (Rail authorities to relay)

138 (Premium Enquiry Services) supports the following services (Again NOT TOLL FREE, Premium Charges Apply):

    On the IVRS:
    1. Tatkaal accommodation availability
    2. Trains between stations
    3. Concession rules
    4. Cancellation rules

By Human Agents (At Call Center):
    1. Dial-A-Ticket (you can book your ticket using Cash Cards only &
get it delivered by E-mail at No additional costs and by Courier
which would be charged by Railways at your doorstep upon delivery
    of the ticket within 48hrs.)
    2. Time-Table Schedules

    Further as per directive from Railways the service provider would come-up with various other utility services e.g.;
    – Dial-A-Taxi
    – Dial-A-Meal
    – Book a Holiday Package (includes Hotel Accommodation also) etc.
    just to name a few…

    I suggest:

    – Public must keep the Railway Authorities on their toes for any
wrong information on any of these Numbers and
    – Should keep the telecom service providers on their toes in-case of
    any Connectivity related issues.

This comes under RTI (Rights to Information to EVERY Citizen) http://www.righttoinformation.gov.in

    All the Best… to Everyone…!!!

    Dear Sir,

I have booked Rail Ticket from NZM to Surat and boarding was kota because it was 50-50 that if we complete our work before the day of journey, we board from NZM that’s why we book ticket from NZM instead of kota and pay full fare. On the day of jouney we were at Delhi so we board from NZM but TTe asked us that you are without ticket and threaten us for Jail and finally he charged extra money that was more than a ticket from NZM to Surat.

Therefore advise me what I should do for claim.

Actually the boarding point is where you get your seat before that point you are not expected to be on train. This is done generally by people to get the reservation etc. I don’t think there is any benefit of writing to the authorities; just my opinion people could differ.

Well its a good initiative, but my experience a couple of days back when I called up the number twicw it told me no dealy & when I reached the Station the train was 1 hour late & it came in 90 minutes late.

Some time back I enquired about a train while standing at the designated platform they said the train is at the station when I said I too am at the platform but the train you speak of is not there the phone was disconnected.

What extent of faith on info provided? Is it deliberately done to avoid cancellation of tickets if the train is late beyond a certain time?

The best is the info will differ if you contact the guest on mobile & know thw station they are approaching or just crossed 🙂

    Dear Mr. Sabharwal,

Whatever the IVRS or Call Center Agents of 139 service answers to the callers are basically the the information provided by the CRIS (Center for Railway Information System), if the database of CRIS’s is not updated then the IVRS or the Call Center Agent is definitely going to share an old information, which in real scenario might have changed and the train might have got late meanwhile.

Which number did you call sometime back, was it ‘139’ ? The Agent can not disconnect the phone without Greeting the caller (e.g. “Is there anything more I can help you with” when the callers says NO, then after greeting him/her with “Thanks for calling Indian Railways, have a good day” the call is disconnected).

There might have been some connectivity failure between your mobile service provider to the connectivity of BSNL (who carry the calls to 139’s data centers at the back end)

Can you please provide your Mobile No. & Date & Time of this particular call, it can be verified (if it is not very old information) by trying to access the Recording of the call.

    All the Best.

      Dear Manikant,

This site is a Blog where people write their views about Indian Railways’ 139 service & share various new information as & when they come to know. Now if people like you start sending queries for confirmation then the sole purpose of this Blog gets defeated.

I would advise if you can search on the web the URL: http://www.pnrstatus.org/
and enter your PNR No. 635 747 6627, find-out yourself the latest status, that would be new learning for you (which would help you later as well)…

On the other hand, you may send SMS to 139 by typing PNR 6357476627, this way you can get to know the latest status of your ticket. By-the-way, currently the status is, it is Wait Listed-2 & there are strong chances that you would get the confirmation by the time your journey starts…

      Best of Luck…

      Regards.
