Before you start reading this article i would like you to understand one thing in your mind – All MBA’s dont succeed and most bloggers Fail. Hence there is no point comparing any of these failures with each other and moving backwards. Here is a practical calculated example which differentiates both of these topics and lets you understand whats better and whats not.
Initial Setup Stage : Once you have completed your Graduation you will be looking for further studies which is when you start searching for all the different MBA Universities located in your country and also in the Eastern countries. The foremost investment would be your time and web surfing expenses for a few days, for researching and making a list of all the colleges which are on the top and which offer the courses you are looking for. Once you find all the universities and colleges, you will have to apply for an admission with most of these requesting you to pay a admission form fees, entrance test fees, information brochure request fees etc each of which costing 25-50$ each. You would have already spent around 200$ till this stage where in you are not confirmed about any college and you are just trying out all the available options.
On the other hand if you are a new blogger you would first look for ideas for blogging, free blog resources, information on top bloggers, how other web blogs were launched and their income in order to get inspired from this stuff after which you can plan out on your blog. Once the research stuff is done you would have to buy a domain name and a hosting account which would cost you 20$ minimum for a years time which includes .com domain name, Linux Cpanel based web hosting account with a MySql database. Once this is done you are ready to install a blog with the help of Cpanel tutorial. At almost 10% of the cost of applying to few MBA colleges you are already a owner of a web blog running waiting for your content. Till this stage you have already saved 90% of what you would have lost if you had gone for a MBA degree.
Level 2 : This is the stage in MBA where you have finally selected a MBA College and you have decided for pursuing a course with a professional college. Most MBA Colleges and Universities charge fees in the range of 20000$+ for a 1-2 years term based on the specialization. This is an average fees for any eastern university and you need to pay more when you have signed up for a boarding school. When you are into blogging you need to continuously work with a lot of dedication and make sure you dont miss any day. You can again for smart publicity of your web blog with a decent 2000$ budget which is 10% of your MBA College fees. In terms of Smart Publicity i mean going for different ways of advertising which may be low costing but would give you a larger audience. Instead of buying banners or advertising on Google Adwords you can promote your website in the form of Pamplets, Creative and low costing Business Cards with Calendars, Printed Pens, Printed Mouse Pads all of which would be used in the daily life by the receivers and you can expect regularly returning visitors.
Final Result : In a classroom of 40 students, not all 40 would be employed in a MNC and atleast 50% would be left without a job or a very low paying job which they have to do because they are left with no other option. In the very same way in case of blogging atleast 50% of the bloggers would still be in the same position because of non-dedication, lower interest, lazy blogging etc. In the other 50% , some of them would opt for their own business rather than working for a MNC but this article is for people who are looking for jobs after completing their Post-Graduation.
Money Talk : When we talk about the calculations it can be a really interesting point because in case of MBA you would be shelling out atleast 20000USD for getting a degree in your hand after 2 years of dedicated education, hard work and after this you would be getting jobs in the range of 10000-15000$/Year which would slowly increase in the range of 5-10% every year and this also depends on your own efforts and the companies growth.
5 Years Calculations : (Approx)
Year 1, Year 2 MBA : 20000$ Investment
Year 3 Job : 15000$ Salary
Year 4 Job : 20000$ Salary
Year 5 Job : 30000$ Salary
Extra Benefits : Few Bonds + Perks : 30000$ Value
Net Value : 75000$ in 5 years period
Year 1 Blogging : 2000$ Advertising + Hosting & 6000$ Revenue
Year 2 Blogging : 1200$ Hosting & 15000$ Revenue
Year 3 Blogging : 1800$ Hosting & 36000$ Revenue
Year 4 Blogging : 2400$ Hosting & 60000$ Revenue
Year 5 Blogging : 3000$ Hosting & 120000$ Revenue
Extra Benefits : Valuable Fame + Blog Asset Valued at 15x Monthly Revenue : 150000$ Value
Net Value : 376000$ in 5 years period
I have myself been to a MBA college and in my experience these MBA Faculties wont be teaching you much stuff and would rather repeat the same line always – ‘You MBA Students are not small kids who should be spoon fed’ , and on this point basis every day 1 student would be taking the class and teach all the other students. Here starts the home work where you need to get ready your next days presentation where no one would be helping you unless yourself. You need to research on your next days Class Presentation and make sure you have acquired complete knowledge on the topic. During the presentation any one from the Class may be asking you few doubts and you should be ready with the answers and this is only possible when you have done excellent research and practice on that specific topic.
The very same no one is really going to help you make money, but the excellent guides available on the web and the help desks can help you in guiding yourself towards the top. You can contact different bloggers for help in ranking and getting yourself onto the top. You can clearly see that in a short or the long term you are still 5 times richer than B-School MBA Degree holders. You can always complete your MBA course through a Open-University and get a Degree Certification but if you are really serious about your time and money, then its a decision time. Most of the above numbers are actually lowered in case of blogging revenue because iam myself at 2nd year of blogging on this blog and making a lot more than the above estimations, which clearly tells you at anyone can atleast reach those approx figures with hard work and dedications.
Very well said and well compared with an MBA degree,Its better we pave our own path and reach our goals.
Agreed Amith ,well said
Very good articale amit,
i like the way you explan.
We are looking for more articale like this
Amit, I appreciate the topics you select and the way you explain.
it is a different thinking .. 🙂
After a second reading I have few questions.
Amit can you write a blog about a plan of budget spending for a new blogger say for example year 1 – 10,000 Rs , Rs xxx for promotional materials, xxx for adwords etc . year 2 – 15,000 , Rs xxxx for link building , Rs xxx for banner advt. like that ..
Also do you really think on an average a blogger will be making
Rs. 24500/- per month on first year and 61250/- per month on second year and so on ??
@Girish, I guess thats the amount which normally every blogger makes after full dedication. If you are not seriously blogging then dont expect those numbers, the very same way like if you are not seriously studying how can you expect better grades.
@Amit Bhawani,
well said amit
@Amit Bhawani, Blogging is serious bussiness. than only you will earn decent.
well said, but some practical difficulties too
@bobit,
Practical difficulties are there in every field
Well, Really interesting Comparison, as I am doing Mba and I am blogger too and You made me think that Blogging is more profitable…But I think Being MBA is more then earning money, its about status and career building…I think MBA will add more value to my professional life instead of blogging…
Best of Luck..
P.S: I am in first semister and i have no time to blog, only on personal blog..do check out..
Regards
ALI
@Ali R Khan, I don’t think blogging doesn’t bring in any status in your life. There are professional bloggers with great names and most of them are dropouts who just stopped their education after schooling and they never cared about their career.
Still they have a great status in the society due to the online respect they have got with their legit blogging skills.
@Chetan, The point in question here is the ratio and country you come from ..
Try explaining to folks around you that you make money from blogging, I bet 90% don’t know what’s blogging, 9% think blogging is on blogspot and is not legitimate.
Now try telling them you are an MBA graduate and they get what you do .. it doesn’t really matter if you are an MBA and you are selling something doing door-to-door marketing.
It’s all about perception. You get to decide the way you want your life. Blogging, if done correctly has good money in it.
Now you decide, if you want to impress others saying you are an MBA grad, or make money as a blogger and do good for yourself and your family ?
This doesn’t mean that I’m against an MBA grad, it has it’s own advantages, again it depends where you are graduating from .. that’s a different topic all together 🙂
I strongly disagree with Girish that being an MBA bring status to you. Its not necessary that an MBA proffessional only holds a status, if the person is not having confidence in him, dont have style of speaking then he cant be a good proffessional holding a valuable status. But if a less educated person is having confidence in him, if he know how to convince and impress the people to make his work done then he is a good proffessional with good status.
Amit is it posible if a person not having knowledge about technical, and he want to start new blog than how it can possible?
Hi Amit,
Again Devil boy here, previously if you can remember I have highly appreciated your article on Offline vs Online business. That was perhaps one of the best of the best article of your blog. And today, this very article is more more remarkable…keep posting…
that is the reason I quit my job and did not opt in for an MBA & also a government job. 🙂
Great Article amit,
I am always telling the same to my friends when some one asking me about my education n all
anyway great article,
Very nice detaled info you gave my friend. But hey think of thisin a way like A blogger doing MBA lolz.
I just started my site 6 months back and its going good as i keep updating articles on a day to day basis but i donno how can i earn money from bloggin …need help amit..
Good comparison mate…
Thanks
Its the money Amit makes when you get your blog built from him 🙂 forget about those easy bucks if you are thinking the easy way out. No degree or profession is good if you want to make money, its just that you have to do good work & money follows only after that. Its not area specif. I feel its a bubble which like real estate is going to burst in future, but it looks quite rosy as of now. Good Luck to everyone. Thats my experience online & offline.
Regards
Saksham
well compared bro…..i m doing bba 3rd yr,,,,i think i should stop thinking abt mba,,,seeing these figures now,,,,i will try blogging now……….
wow very well written post. i was just thinking to compare these from a long time but could not find this much of good stuff and that 5 year revenue comparison is fantastic.
Nice article dude,i am doing my BCA with lazy blogging,i am little bit confused what do i do as i am interested in programming languages and also blogging so after finishing my BCA shall i start serious blogging or now itself
Thanks 🙂
Hi Amit,
Do u know any person who discontinued the studies, and achieved in 4 digit rank(8103 present) in the www? If you know, you should have introduced him in this article. Any how, it is a wonderful comparison. Many people will get inspiration to start blogging. Do you know how many bloggers you created in this world now? Thanks for encouraging others, normally in your profession no one encourage others.
@knmurthy, I actually commenting here because you are accusing blogger (Tech) for not to encourage others. I think any real blogger will definitely encourage others. That’s way we get publicity. Socialism is the most important factor in our world.
Great Article..
I loved the way you compared the Revenue of respected fields..
Would like to read something more like this..
excellent comparison. but i am sure not everyone taking up MBA just to have more money when they get real job, but also a personal quest, feeling satisfied when they continue or get MBA degree. if comparing with the outcomes of blogging you may be exceeding those with higher degrees.
why not take both of them 🙂 .. you can go for your MBA and same time you do Blogging..
invest and same time makemoney 🙂
How much part timer will earn in first year??? 2000$
Really a wonderful article.A serious blogging will be an added advantage for MBA studies.
nice comparison..
Aah! Don’t compare just the degree. If you’re doing MBA just to get the degree, you’re cheating yourself only. There is no comparison of blogging and MBA done from well-known colleges/universities. A successful blogger maybe able to make more than an MBA but you just can’t compare an MBA grad (assuming good college) with how much a blogger makes.
If you want to compare how much an MBA grad makes with how much a blogger makes then that is an altogether different thing. But, if you happen to compare this, please do consider the ratio. I’m certain you will end up with on an average an MBA grad from good college makes more than what an average blogger makes. Average is the key here. Don’t compare the extremes.
Awesome article but it’s for those graduates who will start Blogs from scratch. My case is different- I am somewhat stable in Blogging as of today and currently completing my under-graduation. I am thinking of going for MBA continuing as a Part Time blogger just to make a backup in case Blogging Fails in future.
This article has left me puzzled now. Should I go for MBA or still continue blogging and after Engineering continue as Pro Blogger? I expect a suggestion on this from you.
hey,
i am an engineer + MBA + recently a investment analyst. your figure shows the trick you have done to prove your point. as its a old artical i do not wanna to give in detail, but here is an example……….look at your contradictory statement.
jobs in the range of 10000-15000$/Year which would slowly increase in the range of 5-10% every year so how come in below mentioned figure you have increased the salary by 33% (your maths show why dropped the idea of mba and choose a profession of fools)
Year 3 Job : 15000$ Salary
Year 4 Job : 20000$ Salary
Year 5 Job : 30000$ Salary
@ rahul sharma: To the jack of all trades, who I assume is currently pursuing an MBA and is really unaware of the potential MARKETING LEVERAGE of the online world. Dude, its really a shame that you being in favour of MBA dont understand the sales analytics itself.
If blogging were to be called a fool’s business then companies would’nt have focussed on building brand image through blog reviews, srk would never have used twitter and aamir khan could’nt have increased his fan base and set a hype about his next movie much ahead of its release.
The fools who are currently pursuing an MBA find this blogging at a later part of their life when they have already wasted 2 years of their life reading all theoretical bullshit, which when encounters the practical world finds no match to experience !! So my frnd Rahul is certainly dejected and frustrated that he could’nt find about blogging lately before wasting his precious years and working in meagre paying job which sucks the hell out of an individual from 9 -5.
Advantages of blogging are immense and the best thing is that you being the boss earn money as well as fame. Amit bhawani is a living example of the above statement and rahul you being such a jerk din’nt even think twice before writing that comment.
With all the mathematical calculations that you have shown to prove your point as a strong MBA guy only makes you a stronger candidate to be hired as an audit guy for my upcoming media company. Blogging is an intelligent business and I am glad that not much fools have saturated this place!!
FYI: I am a B.Tech engineer myself who quit his plans to do an MBA after learning enough management expertise through the self education and practical project management route !!
Choice is your’s because life is Yours………..
if any one want to follow then they should follow pioneer in the industry or successful in that field.
Amit is softly speaking,i am telling if any one devote much time in this field can achieve greater than any industry reward id stick with same field(blogging) like doing job in that particular industry’
i have a vast knowledge of many industry in india and some in outside india and i regret i had not started internet based business or blogging(which is the easiest work).
now doing research and starting my own blog with site with some products where earning will cross 1 million in first 2 years only.
Good comparison thought but Amit you cannot compare MBA with blogging just for money sake. Money is not everything. DO you want to be called a jobless guy or a girl who is earning sitting at home. All blogger cannot afford office outside if you can. You need to speak behalf of all blogger not just you. The figures of your articles for blogger might match with John chow, Shoemoney, and many more people but what about other Indians.
Also do you know what happens if suddenly your Adsense gets ban or your server get busted. All these risks you need to consider in blogging.
Whereas a MBA graduate has knowledge of a degree which is much appreciated even though he earns small to blogger. He is proud to say he is Post Graduate what will you call yourself? No one asks how much you earned last month or this month. In a society whats matters a lot is your Fame and Name.
Sorry If I was rude. But these were my opinions.
I’m BE and blogger, web designer, SEO too and I too earn near to $2,000/mo just from blogging but still I prefer a good job than this.
🙂
Hi, Am a MBA and if you consider my points they are still valid. In India you can hire a MBA at a mere 5000Rs per month and this shows the value of the course. Show off degree vs real money can be a lot big debatable topic but if you compare the people who spend lakhs of rupees for a MBA degree finally ending up a job of 8000 to 12000Rs per month then its seriously waste of money of their parents and the students time. If the same efforts are made in blogging for the same period then you could earn a lot more and also get a distance MBA degree to show others in your community that you are a MBA Degree holder.
Believe me : In a society money is what that matters, just check out with your close relatives & friends. A Paper degree with decent to high money making person is given more respect than a hard earned degree plus low salary earning person. Btw you also get a Name and Fame with blogging not only Online but also Offline once you are established and you start setting up offices, teams, staff, business network etc.
It all depends on the way you see something and think positively. Its not just with blogging but any other work like Photography where there is no degree required but the passion and smartness.
Hi friends,
I am very new to this blog .can any one please guide me how to earn money through blog.what is qialification and knowledge is needed . pls help me out .
thanks,
Prabhu / praabbhu@gmail.com
@rahul sharma
@Sagar Rai
It seems that you people are barely new to online world and never look around in the society on practical grounds.
FYI there are some real living examples in India of professional bloggers who are B.Tech from IIT, worked for leading MNCs and ultimately quit their jobs within few years and finally making their dreams true as an Internet Entrepreneur. Even their name has got a brand value. By the way, their MONTHLY earnings are around SIX-FIGURES in USD$$$, which is impossible for any MBA in India throughout his life.
Now tell me who is fool???
Sorry, If I answered rudely.
Some facts are hard to accept and *may* sound rude.
Sorry to all SERIOUS bloggers……… if my words were rude
But i am sure if anybody who is getting benefited from all this is mr. bhavani….. and that thought really not making me quite comfortable.
I never intended to comment on how much blogger earns or who has higher social status or who’s boss and who’s not.
what i intended to convey is that mr. bhawani being a serial blogger shud hav done his homework before putting the figures. as his figure do not support his own artical……… thats all. nothing personal.
and the logic lots of iitian are doing blogging is like that chetan bhagat is (IIT+ IIM) & is a writer…… doesnt make the sense that as a profession writers are better than engineers or managers. ……….. so please my all very intelligent bloggers do not get hurt,
just put your 100% and do proper research before blogging.
ALL I WANT TO SAY – ” IN WHATEVER PROFESSION YOU ARE RESPECT IT AND GIVE YOUR 100%”
BEST OF LUCK FOLKS.
@rahul
You have put the example of Chetan Bhagat (writer & blogger) yourself here, which is contradicting your OWN thoughts about bloggers.
AND,
as you “preached” here: ”IN WHATEVER PROFESSION YOU ARE RESPECT IT AND GIVE YOUR 100%”,
I would say “First, learn how to respect OTHER’S and their profession as well, and ‘WHO ARE YOU’ to declare other’s work as ‘PROFESSION OF FOOLS’.
I would also like to answer about your thoughts, like: “… doesnt make the sense that as a profession writers are better than engineers or managers. …”
Rahul, how many people know you, outside your employer’s place ???… as you are an Engineer + MBA + Investment Analyst.
Now compare yourself with Chetan Bhagat in points of Name,Fame, Social respect and ‘EARNINGS’ as well.
And please, use your ‘Engg.+MBA+Analyst’ skills throughly in calculations giving your 100%.
…thanks.
really either this guy is such a fool that he do not understand what i m wanna to convey or so smart that at any cost just he wants replies shud be continued.
but in both cases i m giving up……….. i can not just talk on to make some one understand who is really do not able to comprehend anything.
or who is intellectually so bankrupt that he will be keep on discussing a crap just for the sake of few bucks………
thats why only i said be honest to ur profession and do a quality work……… all profession are good and any profession suits to the one who do it from his heart. it cud be blogging, writing,
music, management or business………..
so at the first level comparison itself is wrong.
i am feeling so pitty that by mistake i commented on such a low level write up.
still just to make people understand many times i rewritten that my objection was just due to the numbers mentioned in first post and irony is that no body is reading that………… all they are doing is raising the issue whr even i m agree with few………..
thats why i am giving up atl asts
either this guy mr. amit bhavai is really a fool or trying to be extra smart……… watever i m out
@rahul
You raised a mathematical correction in your first comment, thats fine, no one has any problem with that.
BUT…
How dare you got the right to declare other’s as ‘fool’ or blogging as ‘fool’s profession’ ???
Instead of apology, you have been trying yourself to prove correct, while actually you are one of the best example of ‘intellectually bankrupt’.
OK.. I can understand your frustration is due to over-pressure of work just for some ‘bait’.
Yes, it is good for you to quit buddy…from now on, think at least 1000 times before declaring somebody else as ‘fool’.
By the way, before quitting have a look at the earnings of this (single) blog at :
https://www.amitbhawani.com/blog/monthly-income-report-june-2010/
…thanks for quitting.
Extra ordinary comparison!! I really like your article. Now it’s the time to think for being a blogger or getting a degree… what’s say guys… but one can be a blogger and can pursue degree part time or via distance learning…. choice is yours… 🙂
Yeah but Blogging does takes a lot of dedication, patience and time
I will prefer MBA degree as it is long term investment.
An MBA degree or Blogging profession ?There is no comparison between the two.Being an MBA from a good college is far more better than doing just blogging, you get the opportunity of working for some of the best companies in the industries and in very different type of situation and the return is way much more than just blogging.in blogging hardly people know about you.you hardly get any recognition.
Dude, those days are gone when you are given value purely for your education and degree, your words are true in 1997-2002. i have graduated from IIT and have worked with the infy, wipro and now working for a top notch US product development company for the past decade. I have made decent money in IT industry. I have many of my IIT colleagues who went to US for higher studies and MBAs , few of them got settled happily, but significant majority of them are just working for a lower pay and facing an internal turmoil, the only thing they got to show is their MIT, Harvard or stanford degree, they are in a peculiar situation of “high recognition/fame with excellent college background but low spending capacitiy due to lack of money”, internally they are suffering due to lack of lucrative jobs. Today’s business dosen’t need our intelligence or polished skills or the brand of your college, they just want how you can “get the job done” in the way they want. In this circumstance, earning money online either by blogging or otherwise is a very good idea in my opinion. In the end Money matters more significantly than it did previously..an excellent degree with recognition/fame but low paying income source is a disaster…which is what is happening in the current market..
great article and very nice comparison…..i also believe that you can always choose blogging as a carreer..
Hy Amit,
I am a 10th class student with a great passion for blogging. I recently launched my own website itswindows.com
Will you suggest the same for me? or its very early to start blogging for me?
Please reply soon.
Well said Amit. You explained very well.
Hello Amit thanks for providing such information regards MBA, since my childhood, my aim to be a Business man. so it helped me more.
