How to Prevent Laptops from Virus Attacks

October 6, 2008 by Amit Bhawani

Compared to desktop PCs, laptops have been known to be more susceptible to virus, spy ware and other forms of computer mal ware for a number of reasons. Among these, the most common cause is the fact that the portability of the laptop has made users to be able to use this just anywhere from the classroom or offices, to coffee shops that provide free Internet access. Utilizing an unsecured network to access the Internet allows an individual’s laptop to be open to virus attacks.

Prevent Laptop Virus AttackIt cannot be stressed enough on just how important it is to protect your laptop from potential virus attacks that may cause it to crash and the files stored to be corrupted. Here are some simple but highly effective ways to prevent your laptops from being victimized by computer virus attacks.

Regularly Scan Files and Devices
The portability of laptops has also made it highly efficient for friends and colleagues to transfer files from USB flash drives. While this has made dealing with potential business clients a lot more convenient and paperless and friends being able to upload and download various files from the Internet, this has also caused computer viruses that may have infected and corrupted these portable storage devices to infect one’s laptop as well. Before accessing the files from these storage devices, make sure that you have first scanned these. You can do this by going to your ‘My Computer’ icon located in your desktop. Select the drive where the USB flash drive is connected to by right-clicking your mouse button. Click on the option ‘Run scan’ on the pop-up menu to begin scanning.

Keep the Database of your Anti-Virus Software Program Updated
One of the biggest misconceptions of most people is that for as long as a laptop is equipped with an anti-virus software program, it would be protected from different types of computer virus and other forms of mal ware that could easily corrupt the hard drive of the laptop. This is just partly true. Computer anti-virus software programs would only recognize virus and other forms of mal ware which are stored in their databases. As more and more varieties of computer virus are developed, it is important to ensure that the database of your anti-virus software program is up-to-date. You can do this by making it a habit to check for updates on your anti-virus software program on a daily basis.

Run your Computer Anti-Virus Software Program on a Regular Basis
Even if anti-virus software programs come with a real-time protection feature, there would still be a number of spy ware that would tend to pass through in the form of cookies, especially if you tend to spend most of the time using the Internet to conduct your daily business activities. Make it a habit to run a complete virus scanning and cleaning after you update the database of your anti-virus software program to make sure that even those resilient virus and other types of mal ware are eradicated from your laptop.

Upon this i am sure that laptop get more viruses then desktop….
I think using antivirus like Avira or Nod32 uses less resources and give more protection using kaspersky or Norton uses more resources and give some additional protection…
Some depending upon your need it must be chosen…
