Scan and Find Bad Blocks on Hard Disk Drive

June 2, 2008 by Amit Bhawani

I couldn’t use my Computer from the last night. I had to send some urgent mails to my parents, but I couldn’t .When I booted last night. My hard disk drive made a very scary sound. It opened finally, but I don’t want to use it without knowing the reason behind that sound. Is there any bad block on my hard disk? If so, how to scan and find those bad blocks on my hard disk drive? Please let me know the process of finding bad blocks.

Is the Process Easy?
If you are using computer, you must know this basics. You may not be a technical person, but that doesn’t make any difference. This process is technical, but it is also very easy. You can go through the process once and you will understand the way of scanning bad blocks on your hard disk drive.

How to Find the Bad Blocks?
Go to the My Computer section.
Right click on the hard drive and click on Properties. A window will appear. Select the Tool option on that window and go to the Check Now for error checking.

hard Drive Properties

This will start the process of checking blocks. The entire method will take some time. It even takes hours to check the hard disk. If the size of your hard disk is as big as 20 GB or more, you will need to spend a lot of time for scanning the disk.

You have to remember that as C: drive is the primary partition on your computer; you should reboot it for allowing the running of ScanDisk before full loading of the Windows. In this case, the Windows will send you signals and inform you about what is going on. This will help you to complete the process without facing any kind of trouble.

The process is simple, but you will have to first practice it regularly to get rid of all the complications. But once you will learn the process, you will be able to locate the bad blocks on your computer.

You can also teach this process to your friends and gather some praises for you. So, I hope you have understood that you must not always be a technical person for knowing these small facets of computer. If you gather knowledge about computer in spite of being a non technical person, you will only be benefited and will hardly need to ask for a maintenance person.
