Steps to Reset Administrator Password Mac OS X

June 5, 2008 by Amit Bhawani

I use my brother’s old Mac OS X, on my computer. I am using it for the last six months especially for my project work, so I never got time to install any new software in it. Now when I have finished my project and trying to make some changes and add software on my computer, the computer is not letting me do so. I know the reason behind this. I don’t know the administrator password of my system, so the computer is not giving me the authority to access it. But the strangest thing is that my brother also doesn’t remember it. Can you please help me out in resetting the administrator password?

Can I perform the Job on My own?
Are you a completely non technical person and trying to reset your administrator password? If yes the first thing coming into your mind must be telling you that you will not be able to reset it by your own. But this time you are wrong. This process is very easy even for a non technical person with very little knowledge of computer. To change the administrator password on your Mac OS X you will have to first unlock your system. The Mac OS X install disk will be the key to this process.

Can You Please Describe the Entire Process of Resetting Administrator Password for me?
The first thing you need is the Mac OS X install disk, if you don’t have it buy a copied version of the same. Once you will put the disk on your CD drive, double click on the Install Mac OS icon on the disk. You will get a Window with large graphic on your screen with a restart button. Tap the restart button and the PowerBook will be restarted and you will reach the install process.

Remember you have not opened this section for installing the OS, but for resetting the password. You will have to only click through windows and until you are finding the usual set of options on your menu bar. Select the Utilities option and click the Reset Password section on it.

Change your administrative password and save it using the Reset Password tool.

After the resetting the password, click on ‘quit’. You will get to know your new administrator password as your computer will restart.

I think this discussion will help you to get out of your problem, but don’t forget the password like your brother, otherwise you will have to repeat the process again.

BOOT TO CD..PLACE THE CD IN THE DISK TRAY..AND RESTART THE COMPUTER by press and hold the ‘C’key…follw the instruction..u will see the utilities option in the menu bar…and follw the same what is described above…

another way of resetting is going to single user mode…
    >restart the computer by pressing (command and ‘S’key together)
    >u will get into single user mode…type as follows
    >mount -uw /
    >ls users
    >passwd
    >enter the new password
