How to Start a Jobs Portal – Blog Theme, Plugins & Ideas

January 7, 2010 by Amit Bhawani

Iam planning to start a new Jobs Blog where i would be listing different Job Openings, along with all the requirements. After going good amount of research i have found that Joomla or Drupal would be a better platform in order to setup a complete Jobs Portal but iam still confused if there is something possible with WordPress for setting up a Jobs Blog. Question by a Blog Reader.

Jobs Portal Setup
Jobs Portal Setup

First of all before you start with the setting up of your Jobs Portal you need to make a list of all the things you should be implementing on your website. Here is a small list of the same.
1. Categories – Cities, Job Type
2. Option to Upload Resume
3. Registration Form with Membership Feature for Employees
4. Latest Job Opening Listings on the Homepage under Categories
5. Paid access to your Members List for Recruiters & Employers.

Once you have listed down all the required points, then you need to proceed towards setting up a fresh copy of the latest wordpress script on a domain name. Next you need to first setup different categories for the job blog which can be setup under different sections like City Name with a sub category of Job Type. Here is a example – Main Category : New York , Sub Category : Content Writers Jobs. This way you can basically create a few thousand categories under which you can list all the job listings. You can also make use of plugins like wordpress Category Order which can be useful in listing your categories in some meaningful order. Also if your main categories are very limited you should be using a WordPress Plugin called Category Icons which can display a small icon just before the Category Name to be listed on the sidebar of your blog, giving it a excellent look.

Next part would be a option of Registration for the members along with a registration option. Hence for this first of all you need to have to allow Registration to Member, which is available under the wp-admin>Settings section. Check Yes to Membership – Membership Anyone can register option. Next you need to implement few WordPress plugins like members profiler which would make a list of all the members and list them on a page. Next use a plugin called Members Only which would offer access to only people who have registered to your blog and only who would login using the wp-login feature. Also check out the Author Image plugin, which allows the registered members to upload a profile image, can be useful to be shown on the members list. All these plugins would be useful in setting up the newly registered members profile pages, along with

Next install the Job Listing plugin which is a advanced Job Blogs specific plugin allowing you in performing the following functions.

* Now shows the job feed live, before it was caching the jobs locally.
* Job details now show contact details for the job, allowing your visitors to stay on you site to apply for the job.
* Your affiliate link has been added to the template files, so prospective employers can post a job and you get the commission.

WordPress Job Manager Plugin – This is another advanced wordpress plugin which would allow you to achieve the following. ugin for managing jobs on your WordPress site. It supports all the features you need to manage your organization job openings:

* Job Listing
o Categories to create multiple job lists
o Jobs can be filed under multiple categories
o Icons can be assigned to jobs, to make them stand out in the listing
* Job Management
o Jobs can be defined to display between certain dates, or indefinitely
o Simple admin interface for editing, updating and creating jobs
* Applications
o Applicants can apply through the website, using a form that you can customize, so you get the information you need
o Advanced filtering on application forms, to ensure you only get applications that match your criteria: Documentation
o Upon successful application, you can be emailed the details, so you’re always up to date with new applicants
* Applicant Management
o Simple interface for viewing all applicants
o List can be filtered based on any criteria in your custom application form
o Email individual or groups of candidates, to keep them updated on new job opportunities in your organization.

You can customize the theme easily and also the employers would be able to list job entries on a monthly basis on a fixed cost payable through Paypal. Check out small screenshot below and demo here
