What is UPC (Unique porting Code) for MNP Process

January 22, 2011 by Neal 18 Comments

UPC LogoMobile Number Portability has commenced on January, 20, 2010 all across India and first and foremost to get the benefit from the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) you need to first get the UPC (Unique porting Code). So, let’s check out some important facts on this unique porting code like what does an 8 digit UPC code means and also what will be the validity of this UPC with which you can port your number to the operator of your choice irrespective of CDMA or GSM. Before that if you don’t know how to get the UPC, then you just need to send one simple sms, PORT (your mobile number) to 1900. After sending the sms, you will get the UPC from 1901.

UPC, which is a short form of Unique Porting Code basically consists of 8 characters of which the first two characters specifies the Service provider’s name and Service Area code. Like if the first two characters of UPC is BZ then it specifies a BSNL (B), Maharashtra (Z) number and the remaining 6 characters shall contain 1 to 9, A-N & P-Z only and small letters and the alphabet ‘O’ will never be allowed in the UPC.

List of Operator Service codes as the first alphabet in UPC:

List of Codes of Service providers
Aircel D
Bharti airtel A
BSNL B
Loop Mobile L
Datacom Solutions C
HFCL Infotel H
Idea Cellular I
MTNL M
Reliance Communications R
Reliance Telecom E
S Tel S
MTS Y
Spice Communications P
Etisalat DB Telecom (Cheers Mobile) W
TATA T
Uninor U
Vodafone V

List of Operator Service codes as the second alphabet in UPC:

List of Service Codes for Service Area
Andhra Pradesh A
Assam S
Bihar B
Delhi D
Gujarat G
Haryana H
Himachal Pradesh I
Jammu & Kashmir J
Karnataka X
Kerala L
Kolkata K
Madhya Pradesh Y
Maharashtra Z
Mumbai M
North East N
Orissa O
Punjab P
Rajasthan R
Tamil Nadu including Chennai T
UP-East E
UP-West W
West Bengal V

Please note that the UPC which is allocated to the customer will be valid for a period of 15 days from the date of request for all services areas except Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East licensed areas where the validity for the Unique Porting Code allocated to a subscriber shall be valid for a period of 30 days from the date of request, the sms which is to be sent for requesting the UPC by the subscriber shall be the word ‘PORT’ followed by a space followed by the ten digit mobile number which is to be ported which shall be case insensitive. (i.e. it can be port or Port etc.) and in case the Subscriber’s Caller Line Identification does not match with the ten digit mobile number, Unique Porting Code shall not be allotted but a message shall be generated to inform such subscriber that the Caller Line Identification (CLI)does not match with the mobile number.

O is not accommodated in that series so as to avoid confusion between “Zero” and “O”.

you first have to check whether you have complied with the MNP T&C or not like completing 90 days in the network from where you are switching from and if you are postpaid user then you need to clear all the dues before switching. Also, if you have entered wrong porting code then porting request doesn’t succeed. if all are perfect then visit Vodafone store to know the exact reason for rejection.

My current experience still fighting/requesting daily with Idea team :

I am facing the same problem , Idea not allowing me to switch to vodafone .
since last 3 years i used idea postpaid services as my official as well as personal number in NCR region without any payment delay in a single month with all clean records . But this month i received 4000/- bill , ( including 2650/- ISD bills ) i never requested to activate ISD services in my no , i never knew its activated already , neither used these services , there was some auto generated calls initiated from my number in my presence back to back 20-25 calls to international numbers which were not stored in my phone or sim memory .i simply cut all the calls one by one & 1-2 calls i checked where its connecting and it was connected also but no one replied. I thought it was fake internet calls , truecaller apps related or something else because i never requested to activate isd services . Might be in my absence it happened again and received from somwhere connected . Finally i got 4000 bill with 2650/-ISD bills . Now from Idea side no1 able to justify . Outlet guys telling its a franchise we cant do anything . customer care guys suggesting me as most nonsense & non technical way as : “bills are correct , bills generated means u have used….u must pay for that”…..one guy telling from starting till end only : “samajh sakta hu”.. “samajh sakta hu”…..bloody nonsense….. When i asked him about nearest outlet address not franchise simply suggested “shop no / sector 23 gurgaon “…what was that ?? i told him… are you guys working from home ?? can u reach this address by what u telling…..he replied ….its written here only . i took mail id’s : customercare , appellate , trai and wrote them regarding these issue , almost 1 month about to paas , still same reponse we are correct , bills are correct .
My 1st question : who activated isd services without my knowledge? Answer after 10days….after lots of calls ….discussions…..mails…: Sir last May u were changed your plan so it was within that only . Wow What an excuse!!! i actually requested to degrade my plan and from 3g to 2g thats it . (to save my money from what i was not using and paying as i was using wifi most of d time) neither me or customer care guy discussed a word about ISD during plan change.

2nd Question : How those auto ISD calls were initiated from my number without dialling , might be some network problem , or any bypass trick or else i dnt belong to the technical …………..??
Answer : Instant & nonsense answer from some nontechnical executives who calls me twice or thrice in a same for bill payment , donno how to talk or start talking as he is a customer care executive even i tell whole the story everytime to everyone : Sir ye handset ki problem hai ………..very nice!!! means my handset generating auto calls ..sorry auto ISD calls to those numbers only which is not stored in my phone or sim memory …..all unknown numbers . Why not autocalls done from my stored numbers.
Daily i am getting calls for my number disconnections before dialling.

        I had already paid 1400 amount : for STD..LOCAL….ROAMING….DATA….
& not gonna pay for ISD what i never used ..check properly from your technical side and train these kind of employees how to work & talk.

i planned to quit this number if port request not accepting .
I will pay upcoming bill amount also till d last day i will use except ISD .

Specially how & what i experienced here ……,,will share across social sites

Etisalat DB Telecom (Cheers Mobile) shutting down frorm March 2012. I purchased Chhers card on 14th Jan, so how can I port my number? TRAI cancelled the license of some companies they are shutting down, so they should allow the customers of such company to port-out even though they not fulfilling the criteria of 90days.

Or they should extend the validity of UPC code so that we can port out after 90days with same UPC code.

    Hello,
Am trying to port from vodafone to airtel.
Earlier my port request declined due to my bill dues on vodafone, now i have cleared that. Now my porting request again generated but my validity of the porting request is now two days left. I got the message that it will be cerified by mch and revert to me in 4 working days. That is 96 hours. So my question is , if it gets done on 3rd day, my upc code will expire and i have to re do all the process again? Or that irs raised today so it will go on even after expiry date?

I am trying to port from Vodafone delhi postpaid to airtel Mumbai postpaid. My request got rejected due to mismatch of UPC code 2 times. I have generated code with VDxxxxx & submitted to Airtel Mumbai. After few days I have received message from Vodafone saying my request for porting with number VMxxxxx got approved , they will notify me the porting date and time shortly, after few days they rejected my request due to mismatch of UPC. I am unable to understand how code changed from VDxxx to VM xxxx?? Any solution on this would be really helpful. currently I have relocated to Mumbai
