How to Enable/Activate Gmail Offline Access

February 3, 2009 by Amit Bhawani 5 Comments

If you are a Big Gmail fan, then iam sure you would love to use gmail even when you have no access to the internet, this is because you can access to gmail and read all the mails with patience and compose or reply to the emails. Thanks to Google and their team who has introduced the Offline Gmail service where you can download all the latest emails & attachments and get access to them anytime.

In Order to activate this service you need to click on the ‘Settings’ link available in the top right of your gmail Interface, following which you need to click on the ‘Labs’ link where you can find all the different features which can be implemented in your gmail account. Here you will find the Offline feature, Click on Enable & Save Changes.

Gmail Offline Labs Feature

Make Gmail go where the Internet doesn’t. Access your inbox through your browser and use Gmail’s familiar features when you’re offline. To get started, enable this lab and then click on the “Offline” link in the upper-right of your inbox.

Once you save the page, your Gmail will totally reload and you will find a new Lab feature enabled icon on the top, where you need to click again and ‘Install offline access for Gmail’ , make sure you dont install this on a shared/public computer because all the emails are downloaded to that specific PC.

Gmail Offline Feature

Following this you will be asked to create a shortcut to your gmail account, which is a optional feature. Next Gmail starts Synchronizing your account with the local version stored on your PC for the first time which can take good amount of time based on the number of emails you have in your account. Once all the emails are synchronized you dont have to later worry about the internet connection since everything is stored in your PC and whenever you update your gmail account, its synchronized back to the online version.

Gmail Synchronizing Account Offline

Once everything is synchronized, you will find a different icon with a completed message after which you have the freedom to access your mail account even if you are connected to the internet or not. Thanks to Google again for providing this service.[Change Gmail Themes]

Note : You need Google Gears Installed & Enabled on your PC before you start accessing this feature.

Everything is fine but how the LAB tab will appear on Gmail settings. I want to enable this feature desperately but….

may be this functionality depends on version of browser. I am using IE6.
