Increase Data Transfer speed from Pen Drive to Computer

June 9, 2010 by Amit Bhawani

I have a USB Pen Drive of 2gb size with 3 different movies which i want to transfer them to my computer and this process is taking around 20 minutes time, while if i perform the same transfers at my office with their 8gb pen drive the transfer of same amount of data takes less time. What could be the reason behind different speeds for data transfer and how can i speed up the transfer rate?

Pen Drive Data TransferThere could be many different reasons why the data transfer speed is varying and for this you need to first find out the speed which the drive offers and also your computers USB Port version. The latest one is USB 2.0 offers much faster speeds when compared to the older versions which is one reason you may be experiencing slower speeds.

Next you need to perform a Error Checkup on the drive to make sure that there are no errors after a scan, because these portable drives are regularly connected and disconnected along with they being moved around physically which is the reason there could be more chances of getting errors. Hence the drive would be performing at lower speeds because of this.

Do check out if the Antivirus Software which you are using is running some deep checkup of the files stored in the pen drive which is also another reason the transfer could have got delayed. All of these are some reasons on why your drive may be under performing. Finally do check out the 4 Port USB Hub which gives you better performance.

One more very important factor which has been left out is the fragmentation of source (the magnetic hardisk). Generally, movies are downloaded off torrents and if the space is not pre-allocated, the file gets fragmented throughout the hard disk… When the transfer is other way round, if the harddisk is having just enough free space, generally it would be spread throughout the hard disk, hence the access time increases. I guess a regular defragmentation of disk should maintain fast transfer speeds.
