Setup D-Link Wireless Router & Secure Connection

March 5, 2010 by Amit Bhawani

Hello Amit, I have a BSNL Broadband Connection at my Home with 512Kbps Plan, along with this i have a Laptop & a Desktop Computer. I need to make sure that both of these computers should be able to access the Internet Connection and along with this no one else should be able to connect to my connection and make my speed slower. Based on your recommendation for the Best Wireless Routers, I purchased a DLink Wireless G USB Adapter & a D-Link DI-524 Wireless Router costing me a total of 2400Rs. Now please help me in setting up these devices along with security.

We have previously written a few useful guides on Setting up Linksys Router, Reset Router Password, Setup Wifi Connection & Secure Wireless Network

Setting up a Wireless Router : First of all, you need to connect all the hardware, to get started. You need to connect the ADSL router provided by your ISP in this case, BSNL router to the Wireless Router. The Internet connection cable should be connected to the WAN port of the DI-524 router, following which the 802.11g/2.4Ghz Wireless Router get the input of internet. Next we need to configure the router using the settings and make sure that the connection can be accessed from different computers.

Access Router Configuration Panel : Every router has a inbuilt software which is installed by the manufacturer helpful in making the computer recognize the Router and setup the settings. Along with this all the settings or changes you implement on this Configuration Screen is saved in the router based on which it automatically connects. In this case you need to run your Web Browser and in the address bar, type 192.168.0.1 which is the default connection URL to a Wireless Router. Next you will be asked to authenticate, where in you need to enter ‘Admin’ as the username and leave the Password field blank and click OK.

You will find the D-Link Configuration Screen as shown below.

Secure Wireless Connection : The next and final task would be securing the connection so that anyone who is not authorized to use this connection cannot start using it. In order to get this job done, you need to visit the Router’s Configuration Panel and under this click on the ‘Wireless’ option available on the left menu panel. Next you will be shown with a options section beginning with the Network ID(SSID), which can be the display name of your wireless network. You can assign any name in this option as shown below.

Next you need to click on the Security option, which will list you some options under the drop down panel, under this you can select any security mode, but its preferred to select WEP option which will require you to setup a 10 characters password. Once you entered a new password twice, you need to click on the ‘Apply’ button and the settings will get saved in the Router, following which in 1-2 minutes time it will restart and activate the settings.

Wireless Security Settings

Now when you visit the Wireless Network Connections window, you will find a new wireless network which is secured and everyone who has got the password can only access it as shown below. The network key which you had previously assigned is very important to get access hence keep it private and don’t share it with anyone else.
